Planning to change GB oil this weekend. Pretty sure it’s loosing quite at lot of oil though. just noticed a breather hole referred to in a recent thread. Is this still the case for 1979 2 litre? Is this the vent hole in picture below and if blocked, is it possible to poke clean with gearbox in situ? cheers
Yes. Carefully pick out the oil and muck with either a toothpick or a 4mm drill bit. My point being don't compact the debris into the hole. Rinse with a dadge of brake cleaner then drop the oil . Is it wet around the output flanges?
They leak in 2 areas around the flanges. Firstly between the flange stub and the big seal in the adjusting rings. Over the years grooves wear. These can be repaired with SKF Speedi Sleeves because replacement new flanges are eye wateringly expensive... Grooved flange Secondly, they weep down the splines of the diff and blow the flange caps out. Dead easy to lever out the old caps, clean, and push in new ones. Some folk use RTV or silicon as a belts and braces against further seepage.. What's in there As a point of note, the large washer behind the horseshoe clip is domed. It fits in convex, ie puts slight pressure on the horseshoe clip to keep the flange under pressure. Don't fit it concave, it's easier, but wrong and makes it a complete PITA to remove in the future. Dished flange washer Thanks for the opportunity to go for the record for the most uses of the word 'flange' in one post
Yep, breather was blocked and removed debris with drill bit. Yep is leaking from one output shaft, although not as much as I thought as I drained 2.5 litre, so 1 litre lost. I’ll top up with new oil for now and see how shifting and leaks go. info below on how to fix for good helps
