Gear stick noise

  1. Hi all

After a bit of advice. I'm running a standard 1975 Bay with a 1.6 engine. I seem to be getting some noise (or vibration) coming from the gear stick (EMPI stick shifter) on long journeys. The noise stops if you gently pull back on the stick, or slow down (bearing in mind we're talking about 55mph, so not thrashing it).

Is this potentially a gear box problem, or vibrations from elsewhere, or anything else I should be worrying about!

    Thanks

    Shaun

It's probably just the stick. I have a similar problem on mine but if you hold the stick it stops. When I get a moment I'm going to clean and replace the floor ball joint and spring. I wouldn't worry.

  3. Phew! Good stuff. I'm off with the family in her to Devon in a week (which is about 4-5 hours), so didnt want to risk the gear box falling out on the way down! ;)

  4. & there's a nylon bush thing under the cab floor, a part of the gear linkage which wears out unbelievably quickly.
I am having mine replaced with one from a beetle which apparently are made from something harder than wine gums.

  5. The one that goes on the end of the shaft?
