Gear Shifter front bush

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Bumblebee, Oct 21, 2017.

  1. My gear shift has been a bit squeeky so I took the gear still off and wiggled the gear shift rod. The bush has split and there's sideways movement of the rod.

So fellow TBLers, how easy is it to replace the gear shifter front bush on a 1975 bay?

    Easy but tricky.

Remove the screw half way along the gear linkage so that the front part of the rod can slide over the back half. When I did mine I removed the gear lever so that the shift rod can move further back. Insert new bush and then reverse the above.

  3. You may find that the hole in your chassis is too big for the Brazzy bushes. Nothing in life is easy :(

  7. Hardest part is getting the lip of the bush in/around the hole in chassis, worth the effort. Did read somewhere a mod/bodge was to use the plastic foot of a garden gazebo. Place foot over linkgage rod and offer up to chassis cross member and chose two of the already screw holes in the foot to drill holes and screw in self tappers to secure. Shold last a very long time and if lucky costs nothing.

that’s where the second mug of hot water comes in handy.... one for the calming cup of tea to sit back and drink when you want to jack the whole job in and throw the lot over the fence; and the other to dunk the plastic bush in so that it’s nice and soft and goes in like a dream
