  1. Has anybody got a gear selector/leaver for my 79 bay, I do not mind used but not knackerdd as I'm replacing mine which is knackered its like sturring soup at the moment

    Regards

  2. I've got one that came from my '76.

No idea what it's like though as swapped it out of my van before i drove it.

  3. Where are you nick?

  4. Am in Oxford.

If you want to just pay for postage you can have the gear lever for free!

But as I said, no idea what it's like so may not be any better than yours.

  5. Ok thanks nick I'd appreciate it, I'm sure it will be better then what I'm putting up with at the moment. If you could work out the postage and ill send it through pay pal for you

    Regards

  6. Hi Rob,

Have actually just taken a couple of photos of it in case it helps.

Will try and weigh it in the next day or two and let you know a postage cost.

    Thanks.

  7. Thanks nick

  8. Am I right in thinking its just the bottom plate that wears causing the main problem, mines the same you see but I know very little so trying to educate myself & prepare parts for another of the jobs on my list :)

Linkage parts that wear and add to sloppy gears:

The pin in the ball on the bottom of the gearlever
The cup on the front shift rod that the ball sits in
The slot in the cup the pin locates in
    The front shift rod bush
    The rear shift coupling
The ball on the end of the "hockey stick in the nose-cone of the gearbox.
The selectors in the gearbox itself.

Time was you could buy a whole gear lever assembly for £18 but it's doubled like everything else to £40.
I'd tackle all the stuff at the front first.
Aftermarket gearlevers use 2 pivots instead of 1 and the slot/pin to keep it straight, so get over the worn pin/slot problem - or if you can weld, repair the pin and slot.

  10. When I removed my gear leaver it's seems that it is excessively worn, but in the past one of the previous owners has tried to have a go at fixing it, which in turn has made it worse,

Is there still assembly kits available then?

BUT there are two different gear sticks, that's an earlier one up to 74. The early ones have a flat on the end of the ball, the later ones have a protrusion. I don't know if the balls are the same diameter or how interchangeable they are, but I do know if you put a late one in an early bus it won't press down for reverse. The other way round I'd GUESS might work.

  13. Thanks for the info i never knew that changed in 74, typical vw, is it worth a buy or do they do a late 74 onwards repair kit

I don't think they do. A while back you could get a late front shift rod, but not sure now.

Looks the thing for Left Hand Drive - the gearlever is cranked towards the driver I think.

  16. Ah that's a shame. Do you reckon that kit from JK would work.... In theory?

  17. Bobreoc - I just managed to weigh the gear stick and it's just over 1kg, and so according to the Royal Mail website that would cost £6.55 to post.

Not sure if you still want it after seeing all the discussion that's gone on over the last couple of days. If however you do, please let me know and I'll give you my PayPal details for paying.

    Thanks.
