  1. Hi only just got my first vw. Its an early 68. I've only driven it justonce so far. I struggled to get the gears in although the chap i purchased it from didn't seem yo have any probs
Can anyone tell me the gearstick pattern ?
Is it just a standard h with reverse to the left inside

  3. Ok thanks for that so is that as your sitting in the seat ... I mean its on the ******* so first to second is down but slightly to the right as you go down
When putting in reverse do you pull up or push down at all ?

  8. they can sometimes be a bit vague and need a bit of practice to get the gears every time.

generally this is due to worn bushes in the shifter linkage mechanism. Pretty easy DIY fix and you can get replacement plastic bushes from Coolair, JK, VW Heritage etc. you can also get aftermarket shifters that are fairly straightforward to fit and shorten the throw of the shifter by moving the pivot point upwards a bit.

 yep there's a few of us running auto's - we don't have your luxury of - "hunt the gear" but for the privalage we get 17mpg if we're lucky....

  10. Oh thanks that is really helpful

  11. Zed

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

Best tip is do it lightly and patiently. Don't try and ram it into gear.

  12. And press the clutch to the deck ;)

  13. Just stir a pudding and you will find something. Every van has its own pattern im sure.
Dont worry you will get used to it, eventually.

Change gear with a light finger touch. Don't rush the change but allow it to gently slip into gear. Getting a gear in a bus is a Zen thing.

  16. My tip is to go into neurtral then go into gear through 2nd and 3rd and ,dont try pushing in one movement to the next gear
Never missed one since using that method :)
