Gas tank question

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by DriftingBear, Nov 14, 2012.

  1. Hello friends.

My new camper (to be) has a gas tank underneath. I don't see this on very many campers - do people move it, and if so why?

Also, will I have to alter this before I can fill it up in the UK, and where is the best place to get it filled?

    Thanks!

you can get the parts to make it fillable at uk lpg stations and run the cooker/heating off it took mine off originally but will refit eventually, they fetch well over £100 so don't give it away.

  5. Ok I see, they seem quite rare then? I was a bit concerned about how low to the ground it is but I'll have to be extra careful.

They add a bit of buoyancy as well ;)

they're not 'rare' for an american westy, but plenty of uk peeps want them, i took mine off originally to clean and get it tested etc, the pipework from the tank itself is rubber so will need replacing, there is a link on here somewhere giving details of the bits you can buy to make it uk compatible, think you can get the bits on evilbay

  9. Ok thanks Ricky, I'll have a search for that other thread.

One thing to be wary of, the gas cylinder is essentially a pressure vessel - dunno how the rules go for something like that but our gas cylinders have to be inspected regularly (and a pressure test every 10 years).

Worth considering in case of corrosion on the tank - does anyone know what pressure they will sustain when filling?

  11. As Mr Roo says, they're not rare for US-spec vehicles, where the gas tank had to be outside the vehicle.

I'd get it pressure-tested and plumbing checked, then use it if it's ok.

  12. Thanks - where would I get it pressure tested? Is this something a regular gas engineer could look at, or could the garage do it?

  13. Mines brill, a few quid to fill up and lasts for ages. Its only running my stove at the mo but will run a propex next year. All you need is an adaptor from 'Gasure?'

I guess a Gas Engineer could do it easily. Its just a matter of inspecting it for corrosion and rusting of the walls and then it holding pressure + a percentage more than safe working working pressure (for example 3000 psi + 500psi for overload). We have ours tested annualy by a Boiler Inspector & Lifting Equipment specialist
