Gas safety/ gas alarm

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Dr a, Apr 12, 2020.

  1. I fitted the proper and hob in my van perhaps a decade ago. It’s tidily fitted and I think it’s safe. But with a little man on board I think I’d like a bit of extra safety with a CO2 / gas leak alarm. I’m looking at the trio gas alarms. Anyone got one fitted? Any recommendations?

    CO, not CO2.
I think I'd smell a gas leak, I can tell if the interior is on fire, it's too small to need smoke alarm IMO.
CO is the one that'll save your life.

I have to be honest I don't have a CO in the bus either. Why would you? If you are daft enough to BBQ inside your bus with the doors and windows shut, or leave the grill on all night for heating...

  4. Gas sinks to floor level, CO rises with the warm air you need two different alarms.

It's interesting to note the UK Boat safety scheme (MOT for inland boats) requires CO and smoke detectors but not Gas despite there being no way a build up of gas can get out of a boat. I think it does slowly dissipate so it's big leaks that are the worry - which you would smell.

  6. As with domestic gas leaks.

Gas has to be outside the accommodation with vent at the bottom that can't then get into the accommodation. I have a bubble tester built in for leaks outside the storage hole. A narrowboat on fire is like a furnace with a horizontal chimney, you would be getting out quick or not at all.

Ditches - it would only go down about a foot before it hit the bottom.

  10. ALWAYS turn the gas off at the bottle before sleeping in an enclosed space like a camper or a boat!

Why! Have you got a leak?
Do you turn the gas off every night in your house?

  12. Not much use having a propex then!

  14. We use our heater either when driving or on site, but never overnight. Plenty of lorry drivers deaths have been CO related and overnight heaters.
Now't wrong with a good sleeping bag

And my feet would be dry but to keep almost on topic my gas locker would fill up with water.

I have one in mine. I forgot and shifted my van on a camp site with the sliding door open and wondered where the beeping came from! It didn’t take long for CO to get to a trigger level

Yeah, I was thinking later...Ebers and propex, poor door seals, wind blowing the wrong way...maybe.

I have a combined CO/smoke alarm, kept on top of the Westy wardrobe which is just above the hob.
It does seem to work! It has occasionally gone off unexpectedly when I’ve had the kettle on and not opened the window enough, it makes a right racket and has had me scrambling to press the button!
Happier with that than not knowing though.

  20. I’ve ordered the Trio, will post more when it’s fitted up. (in the bus - not for a crime it’s not committed)
