Gas-a-just shocks

  1. Hi all.
My bus is mildly lowered with gas-a-just shocks all round.
It has beam adjusters on the front but it's not lowered that far.
It drives beautifully and rides lovely over speed bumps, insulation in the road, etc..but on very rough surfaces, concrete roads, cats eyes, etc. It rattles & shakes your bones to bits!
Is that because the shocks are quite harsh?
Although they are called gas-a-just I don't think they are adjustable are they?

KYB gas a justs are not adjustable, simply stiffer damping characteristics

  3. bumps, dips they're moving in and out, stopping the bus from bouncing. if you're just driving over rough surface with the bus staying level they're not really doing anything. vibrations getting passed through to the cabin could be reduced if you were to replace old/ worn bushes?

What tyres do you have? Lowered bus so maybe lower profile? the tyre sidewall does a lot of small bump absorbsion - if you have low profile tyre you've lost some of that. Check you have correct pressure (too high will give harsh ride) also the age of the tyre. Mate of mine bought a lovely classic SL a few years back, rode like crap, even though dampers were relatively recent. tyres had plenty of tread so he hadn't considered replacing them - i checked the manufac date - they were OLD.. once he put some fresh rubber on it the difference was massive, way better.

as above, no idea why they're called "adjust" as there isn't any adjusting going on!?

The Gaz coilovers on my bus have rattle volume controls, little dials to tweak the damping.
Unfortunately if you e.g. halve the travel on the suspension the shocks and springs have to be twice as hard to stop it bottoming out. So your feet flap off the pedals at 60mph on bumpy roads.

The price of messing with it.

  5. I have standard 185r14 tyres on the bus..brand new. It's not too low.
Was toying with sticking some alloys on it but it rides so nice on smooth roads like you say didn't want too mess too much.
Just wondered if the shocks are too stiff?
