Gamblers

  1. The only bets I have ever made have been on the Grand National -although I did do the pools a couple of times many years ago. Was in the works lottery syndicate (you have to be don't you - imagine the others winning and not you!) . I did occasionally buy a lottery ticket in the early days - but only one - and had 4 numbers up and won around £200 and not bought another since. It is not logical to buy more than one.

  2. Nooooooo

If you read further down you will see that I have said the bookie wins most of the time,I've never really thought about how much Ive lost over the years and if I'm honest I don't want to know

  4. I do premium bonds , ive won loads of small amounts , but i dont loose my capital and i still stand a chance of winning a mil , yeh i could get interest but its a bit of fun and your money is safe :)

  5. i watched my mate win £15 thousand on the roulette wheel once ...

by the end of the same month he had lost a total of ............

    £43 thousand....

TBH ... he has now kicked the gambling by attending and running a GA meeting

  6. Going for the ever elusive "Big one" :(

  7. I did some shopfitting for one of the big bookies ,I couldn't even break even on that. The winning slips had to go back to head office for double checking they used to get half a bin bag of those, and the losing slips would easily fill 20 bags a week

  9. I used to be a "bonus hunter", between 2004 and 2006. Back then online casinos would offer decent bonuses to sign up with them as well as for monthly and ad-hoc promotions. They still do in fact, but the big difference then was that they were mathematically profitable back then. Nowdays you can get bonuses for signing up, but when you look at the terms you'll see you have to play a high amount of games with a high house egde (typically slots). In 2003 most bonuses could be completed by playing blackjack or video poker and the wagering requirement (WR) wasn't all that high. You simply multiplied the house edge of the allowed game by the WR and if the resulting figure was lower than the bonus, then the maths were in your favour for turning a profit.

So I happily did that for two years, making around £500-800 a month. Then I met up with the members of an American bonus hunters forum in Las Vegas (the first forum I ever used Sir Arthur as a username). I was then told about something called "slots doubling" - a loophole they had found on two slots games on a particular software used by a number of casinos. This turned unprofitable slots-only bonuses into hugely profitable ones. And because the casino owners thought they knew the punter was unlikely to win, they offered very big bonuses. One particular group would match your initial £500 deposit when signing up. Then would reload your next deposits up to a grand. AND this software could run on autoplay, meaning you'd enter how you would like it to play and for how many spins and then leave it overnight.

For a time in 2006 I was making £3000 a month doing this. But things like this never last. The owner of the forum - a rather "confident" chap made an enemy online. And this enemy knew the secret, so to spite one man he shared it on the world's most popular poker forum to destroy the money machine. The casinos closed the loopholes within a month when they realised what was going on. Advantage gambling is not a crime, but casinos will never let it happen for long. Still, nice while it lasted. My spreadsheet said I finished around £36k up from the whole venture. It paid for a couple of holidays and most of the nicest car I've so far owned.

I still play the odd session of video poker as I quite enjoy it, but my Betfair account is manually set to a maximum £10 deposit a day. I love going to Vegas (four times and counting) and there is a group of Americans who also think I'm called Arthur.

Won the woman of my dreams
And rode together into the sunset.

  11. Most gamblers don't do the maths, which is why they lose and the bookie wins.

  12. Erm, what?

I sold a car to a bloke who'd won the lottery, all 6 numbers!
Only trouble was that the numbers out of the draw were all under 31, lots of people use family birthdays for their numbers and that week there was something like 130 jackpot winners.
Imagine getting the jackpot then finding you'd got to share it with 129 other people, the pay out was still ok, about 110k I think but still a bit of a choker.

  14. you was lucky he wouldnt have wanted it if the others hadnt got 6 numbers too
