Furniture Ply- vinyl unstuck

  1. Hi
I fitted our interior using furniture ply with a vinyl layer glued on. It's the same materials used in caravans etc. Yes I should have splashed out and bought vohringer but the budget dried up.

We used the hob & grill Before I fitted a stainless steel protector at the back of the hob on the underside of the lid. The heat melted the glue holding the vynil on and it's started to lift on the opposite side of the lid, I guess the heat went up through where the piano hinge is fitted.

The hob and grill is a safe distance from any fire risk or from damaging the units.

Most of the edges are finished off with t trim so the edges can't lift but the piano hinges don't hold down the vinyl

I could probably stick it back down with heat resistant glue but I doubt it would be a nice finish as the vinyl is pressed on at the factory. It will probably bubble and continue to lift if I don't put something down.

Anyone got any ideas of a thin sheet I could screw down to stop the vinyl lifting anymore. I'll get a pic of the bit that's lifted later.

  2. How about a narrow strip of aluminium screwed on and butted up to the hinge. Just be careful you don't put the screws where they would hit the hinge screws.

  3. That was my first thought. It would run the width of the unit , one either side of the hinge.
wondered if there was another material other than metal that would be thin enough that I could screw down. Like a kind of thin splash back.

  4. Would the piano hinge not just unscrew from the edges and screw to the top?

Or would the screws have to be too short?

  5. Yeah that was an option I just wanted the hinge hidden instead of on the top of the lid.
Moisture may be a cause too as it's getting worse and another area that's not near heat Is starting to bubble.
I might look into some speckled spray paint and take the lids off and spray them instead. Not sure how it will look but I have spare board in the shed that I can practice on.
