Fuel tank outlet pipe broken

  1. Hi Everyone,
Removed fuel tank after several episodes of fuel starvation causing several holiday & festival woes ( fuel filter changed several times even though old ones very clean ) and found 2 things - the fuel tank outlet pipe is very corroded and about 5mm in length so fuel hose is only just securable but not at all safe and general crud in tank from recent resto job.
It's a 78 model so the correct fitting tanks are the ones with the welded outlet pipe with no filter, model number 211-201-075h fuel tank has the screw outlet that enables the fitting of a screw on outlet pipe with filter.
Can you weld on a new outlet pipe ?
Does anyone know if these models fit in a late bay, just asking before I order one and try it cos I'm a little fed up of not getting places !!

    Thanks in advance

  2. I'd suggest brazing rather than welding on a fuel tank if you have to. Make sure you flush the tank well first (fill it with water then empty)

  4. I think the original was brazed on. Fitting the older type might work, but brazing on a new one prob better. It’s only a length of steel pipe.

On no account weld ..any trace of fuel residue could be enough to cause explosion . Get it done by a professional who will know all safety factor's when welding or brazing fuel tanks . Most garages would turn the job down to be honest .

  6. No unless you want to fill it with water turn it upside down and braze it on even then just no .
    Get a new one

  7. Thanks for the answers

Do the new tanks with the fixed outlet pipe come with an internal filter ?

  8. The tanks with the fixed filler don't have a filter, but you've got the external filter right after the tank outlet.

  10. Looks good. Let us know what the quality is like when you get it.

  11. I had mine welded, but it hadn’t been used in over ten years, not many places will want to weld it for you.

  13. New Tanks are not expensive, when you consider you would spend £60+ on materials to re-paint the inside and paying someone to weld/braze a new pipe on.
£200 for a new tank, just fit and forget.
