Fuel tank breather pipes

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by peekaybee, Nov 30, 2012.

  1. Have managed to get some dry storage for my van which is great but have had the owner complaining about the smell of petrol. I noticed before that there were a couple of pipes in the roof of the engine bay un attached and was informed to what they were. I understand that they can not be blocked off but where do they connect to? Is it somewhere on the carb or the oil bath filter? Do I just use 5mm hose? Any help greatly appreciated
    Cheers

  3. Think that 1st I am just going to try and connect up the fuel breather hose (when I got the van all the engine bits were disconnected and the oil bath filter was off) just trying to work out how to connect the end of the fuel breather pipe to whatever it connects to?

if the smell is coming from the expansion pipes then while you're not driving or using it (especially as it's cold) you could block them off to see, i personally would replace all pipes as it's been sat a while and you don't know the history of them, chances are it's the top of the tank or the filler pipe that's making the smell anyway.

  5. Have blocked them off and seems to do the trick. Still no wiser as to where the bit off the T junction goes though. Is it here?[IMG] or here on the top?[IMG] I have a long length of breather pipe that is coming of the carb that needs to find a home too!

  6. Will of course inspect / replace all the pipes when the engine comes out but not sure when that will be yet

mine goes into the airfilter housing, so as long as you can trace the input of that hole to it actually feeding into the airbox it should be ok, can't help with the carb one as i've got fuel injection - is it maybe a servo pipe?

  8. Anyone got any idea where the breather hose from the carb goes? Have ordered the T breather bit. Must be the most expensive bit of rubber in the world! Re the oil bath air filter. Are you supposed to change the oil in it once in a while?

  9. According to the "how to keep your vw alive" book a dirty oil bath filter is one of the main causes of engine failure! Will clean it and change the oil. Still not sure where fuel breather hose attaches? Anyone got one these that send a pic? Have searched on google but without much luck

if you can't see barneys pic (presume you on tapatalk?) click the corner of the screen and open in safari it shows then

  14. Ok got it now. (thanks Ricky). A bit blurry but I get the idea. Will look at one of the shops for a reducer or connector of some sort

  15. Also just realised that the vacuum advance on the distributor is not there! Is this due to electronic ignition being fitted?

  16. Having trouble finding this reducing tube. Any suggestions? Also, no filler line but I think I should just fill it to below the baffle?

  17. I put a motorcycle one way valve on mine, lets air in but not smells out. No pressure should build up if your not driving it.
