try it, as long as your fuel pump doesn't earth through its casing it should be fine. test it by applying 12v to the positive side of the pump and keeping the negative side wire away from anything, if the pump doesn't run it should be fine.
I ended up wiring the relay by switching the positive, as mounting the fuel pump without it earthing would have been difficult.
Goof afternoon all, if one was installing an electric pump, and decided not to have 87 connected (above picture) - this would still work? A button to prime the carbs is a nice to have but not really necessary IMO. And why is the one below SO different?? And which is better?
To further complicate things I have two relays, one is switched by the alternator light and one is the hot start relay which runs the pump when the ignition is turned. The one in the picture above does the same job only is better in my opinion than my more complicated effort
If you wire it up as per the top one, but omit the connection to 87 - you won't be able to prime the carbs. The second one "primes" as you run the starter. Quite neat - but might require a bit of cranking if you've just replaced all the fuel hoses...
Ok - I'm over thinking this anyway, thanks for the input. Going by No 1 diagram it looks to me like it would not work at all. The switch would go over to 87 when energised, which in my case is connected to nowt - but in the diagram to another switch..... There is a two relay diagram, see below. Favouring this as I don't like life to be easy:
Ah, but in diagram 1, the relay is only energised when the "G" light is on. The alternator outputs +12V to the warning light (and relay coil) when it's running (and 0V when it's not). The other end of the coil (and the G light) is also at +12V from the ignition feed, so no current flows. The coil is not energised, so the N/C contact is selected.
I think I might just be getting this, so this diagram assumes power is being supplied i.e. the ignition with is on. The alternator light will be on, thus flicking the switch to 87a and 30. You can use your push button to prime carbs. Once started the alternator light goes out 30 is connected to 87a - and fannys your monkeys uncle. Right?
I appreciate you using your dying minutes of power to assist... Problem with this, I think, is that it may not work with electronic points? This was the diagram I had for that type of relay (I think):
Took the screenshot a few weeks ago, it isn't 17:25 yet Going to have a play with this type when I have 5 min to see if it works, I can't see why not though mk1 / mk2 golfs must have been electronic ignition I like the bit with the in built prime pulse for the carbs No need for a prime button or a secondary relay
That article mentions points....good info however... Im committed to the basic method now, the FI relays are expensive, even second hand on eBay. Going to a breakers my be a different story...
Fair 'point' - its just something I read is all. I assume you have electronic ignition as well so would be good to see how you get on.
I didn’t make it clear that I have been using a fuel injection relay with an electronic distributor for several years – it works fine.
