Thinking of replacing my old solex carbs for twin webers on a 2 litre CJ engine and advice is sought as to whether I need a fuel pressure regulator, if so what type and will it work with a mechanical fuel pump.

    Thanks in advance for looking

Webers need 2.5 - 3psi a regulator will work with the mechanical pump but I’d change to an electric pump that doesn’t need a regulator. Which Weber carbs are you thinking of?

Thinking of weber 34 ict cb performance

  4. I went for the 12v Huco low pressure pump option with my 34ict’s. A decent fuel pressure regulator was near enough the same price so the electric pump conversion was a no brainer.
Be prepared to have to rejet the ict’s as they rarely work well out of the box. Eurocarb are the guys to deal with for the carb kits, jets & pump:thumbsup:

Its probably better to go for a proper regulated low pressure electric pump unless your mechanical pump is original.
Replacement mechanical pumps often put out 7 or 8 psi which Weber carburettors can have problems with. If not immediately, a few thousand miles down the road when they start leaking petrol into the engine because of prolonged high pressure and vibration.

We're running 34 ICT's on a 1915 type 4 with fuel pressure supposedly regulated to 2.5 psi with no issues.

I say supposedly as Ive never measured the actual pressure being delivered.

  8. A "Carter" rotary pump from machine7 will deliver 3.5 psi. A Malpassi fuel regulator is another option with the cheaper Facet pump. I have the former on the Bug and the latter on the Bus. The Malpassi can be adjusted to suit. Can't help on the suggested Huco solution, sorry.

  9. His 2.0 recomended jetting didn’t work for me. Far too rich. Maybe ok for you. Every engine is different.

When you say his recommended jetting didn’t work for what did you mean? Mike is recommending a Malpassi king for mine? Going for an electric pump sounds a good compromise though.

  11. Be aware that the Malpassis with the filter bowl are quite big. You might just want the regulator bit - PetrolKing?

Ok thanks, I’ll check that out.......

    Thanks,

  13. I tried his 2.0 jetting recommendation but it made my 2.0 run too rich. The 165 main 185 air jet was a big jump up from the 145 main 165 air i was running on a 1911 motor i had in the van previously.

  14. Instead of the expense of new carbs and the issues of setting them up, new electric pump, pressure regulator and so on, you could have your solex carbs refurbished. What exactly is wrong with the solex's anyway, they are original and great carbs.

  15. Jetting can only really be done accurately on a rolling road. however, definitely change the emulsions to F6 if you go for ICT's the F78's are no good. Rolling road sessions are not cheap. About £200. It adds up. Might be worth getting your solexes professionally rebuilt. Try Gower and Lee.

No-one can really tell you what jets you need. It is trial and error to get it right for YOUR engine.

Its why I bought a box of jets for about £80 total, and an AFR meter for £200, jetted it myself, took it for a drive over representative hills and motorways, watched it, repeated until I was happy.

Thanks all - my Solex's were refurbished by Stateside tuning which I had done after I fitted my ICT's but because they were running ok I didn't get round to fitting them so hence trying to decide whether to put them back on or not or stick with the ICT's

    Thanks.....

If I go back to the Solex’s will I still need a pressure regulator wi5 these?

    Thanks
