Fuel leak

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by dubmeister, Sep 20, 2014.

  1. Hi folks, just got the van all dolled up for a wedding and it developed a fuel leak, its a 1600 t2 bay the leak is coming from between the cylinder fins above the push rod tubes, checked all my fuel lines, and they are ok, can anyone tell me what the problem might be, many thanks in advance.

    Definitely fuel?
I'd think it can only be coming from fuel lines, breathers (unlikely) or a filter.
Have you got braided fuel lines?

  3. Hi Thanks, whats a breather ? all fuel lines and filters are ok, my fuel lines are not braided

    Inlet manifold lose but unlikely.

How do you know its fuel?

There are various tank breathers in the engine bay and behind the fire wall that perish. I can't see any of them causing fuel in the area you've described though.
As @Razzyh says, massive over-fuelling causing non-atomised (if that's even the right description) fuel to run down the manifold?

  6. carb float stuck and flooding out of carb?
start taking bits off and find out where it's coming from

  7. Can't see any obvious signs of leakage from the carb area, definatley fuel, (smell) right thanks for all your advice, got to go to a wedding and explain to my friend why she won't be going to her wedding in the camper, gutted !!

Fuel pump leak maybe? A long shot though.

  10. Check all round the carbs and then check again with a torch and mirror

If there is a sudden fuel leak then most likely you have a split in a fuel line, as all rubber fuel lines eventually seem to split these days. If its a lot of fuel its probably between the fuel pump and the carburettor as thats under more pressure.

Dont forget that the leak could be a misfitted hose clip on the end or the hose end has gone hard and wobbled loose.

Wait a while for the fuel to evaporate, then look for any 'wet' bits around the fuel pump and carburettor.

Yet another cause could be you filled it up properly for the first time in a while in preparation for the wedding and it has poured petrol out of the tank vent tubes where they are joined by braided hoses.

These are made of the same rubber as the original fuel hose and are usually also full of holes by now. There might even be a missing hose somewhere, especially from the T connector above the carburettor from where there should be a hose running across to the air filter to capture the smelly vapour.

Take a look at the diagrams, and perhaps simply replace all the hoses you can see. Halfords sells expensive bits both 'thin about 3mm' and 'thick about 5mm' fuel rated hose which can be used to fix things in a hurry.

  12. What he said ^^

  13. Manifold boot split ? Something else probably amiss as well though if its running out ?

  14. Thanks everyone, I forgot to mention that the fuel only leaked while I was trying to start the engine, when left alone the leak stopped, anyhoo I'm back home now after being at work for a month, and I ordered a carb rebuild kit for the PICT 34 carb for the 1600 bay, as I suspected a leak from the carb, stripped the carb down cleaned thoroughly and and replaced all the parts in the kit with new, fitted back to the van connected up the fuel, connected the fuel cut off solenoid and the automatic choke and everything else, the engine will turn over but will not start, it's not even threatening to start, just continuous turning over , my battery is now charging, anyone any ideas as to where I'm going wrong? any pointers ?

  15. Did you put any fuel in the float chamber before you refitted carb? If not you might have an air lock - the float valve is stuck or the fuel pump is stuffed? Take air filter off, and throw a bit of petrol down its throat and try again or spray some Carb cleaner down there instead , if it catches you just need to get fuel pumping up if nothing its an electrical issue , you migth have disturbed a cable somewhere?

Test you have 12v to the Fuel cut off valve also?

  17. have you refitted the fuel lines to the pump back to front? easily done....

  18. Thanks folks, Stan I will try that in the morning, tested the fuel cut off solenoid, got the "click" when removing the connection, everything else seems to be ok !!

  19. Done this !!
