Fuel hose diameter quick question

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by LewBLew, Jul 2, 2014.

  1. The hose on my bus is 5.5mm diameter but JK, VWH etc don't seem to sell it in this size. Can anyone recommend a supplier? Or can I run 5mm in some places and 5.5mm in others without it mattering? :)

  2. Machine 7 and Volksbolts, amoung others, sell 5.6mm hose.

  3. it won't matter a jot, unless it's FI

  4. I am looking to replace as much hose with hard pipe as possible, but definitely the bends, its 5.6mm hose, what ID and OD kunifer pipe do I need to mate with this? Standard set up Type 1 engine.

The stuff jk sell is 5.6 codan, even though it says 5mm on their website. Heritage is probably the same

Edit... I should probably read the thread before replying to the first post from many years ago...

  6. Volksbolts 5.6 mm CODAN R9 . With a nice new large Meyle plastic fuel filter under the tank. Personally I wouldn't use hard fuel lines, just the short piece that goes through the tin with rubber grommet. Fuel hose is vibration proof but hard line is not.

  7. get some proppa p clips to hold your hose as well.

  8. try www.advancedfuelsystems.com and their bio diesel fuel lines, 100% ethanol safe, think they do 5.5 , bought mine 5 years ago for my fi system (6.5mm ) and is still ok. Fit proper fuel line clips.

  9. As Izzy said. Only use FPM fuel hose (Bio fuel hose) expensive but cheaper in the long run and the safest. As long as it is smaller diameter than 6mm to make it a tight fit over 6mm spigots, 5.5/5.6/5.7 mm all will do.
Use the minimum amount of rubber hose as possible, as rubber hose is microporous and lets the lighter parts of fuels evaporate through it leaving the harder to burn heavy fuel behind, causing hard starting and poor running until fresh fuel has run through. Longer runs of fuel line use metal or what manufactures now use 6mm OD polyamide tubing. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Norgren-...026510?hash=item1a5e2b01ce:g:aLUAAOSwHShbm3rB

Thing is with hard line hoses you still need a flexible join where the fuel line leaves the tinware, or the hard line hose will be flexed by the engine's movement in its rubber mounts. Also need to protect it against vibrating .
VW did use reasonable lengths of metal tubing of about 6mm OD to connect up the fuel line round the side of the engine to the fuel pump where it goes near the heat riser, the bit of hose that if rubber gets hot and cracks. But the ends of the tube were pushed into rubber hoses.
I went for the Goodridge stainless outer braided nitrile fuel hose sold by VWH which seems to be pretty bomb proof, but hard to get onto e.g. the fuel pump spigot. But it will go on.
I changed after seeing how crispy rubber hose goes in a fire, and how quickly it cracks where it is bent tightly in hotter areas.

I would use 6mm od tube and short sections of quality flex hose to stop cracking.
