Fuel gauge check procedure website?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by KarlB, May 14, 2013.

  1. Just looking for the procedure for checking the fuel gauge/sender. In the past I've found it through Type2.org or Ratwell but the links ain't working :-(

Anyone got an offline version or know another place to find it?

    Cheers!

  3. And this

    2 easy tests:
Pull the wire off the sender. The gauge should go to EMPTY.
Take the sender wire and ground it (Ground it to chassis, not the tank). The gauge should go to FULL.
If it passes both these tests, the gauge is good and any problems are in the sender

  5. Excellent. I've already grounded out the wire and nothing happened. The needle doesn't even flinch when the ignition is turned on. I'll investigate further this evening.

    Thanks all :)

  6. After a 2 month layup my fuel gauge only goes up to 1/4 when the tank is topped up. It's the voltage stabiliser gone I think. It consists of only a bulb and a diode according to Speedy Jim. The bulb is working so I guess it's the diode gone. If I unscrew the stabiliser from the back of the gauge I get a full tank reading again.

Has anybody managed to repair one of these? JK does these for about £35 but is there a cheaper generic substitute?

  7. soz to be so "naff" but carry a 5 ltr fuel container (with fuel in ) ?me, never leave home without same ,experienced far to many vehicles where fuel gauge shows say ,quarter tank , >goody ! then , suddenly falls to red ! oh flip ! and some more oh "flip ". now I just dig out said container.

  8. Sorted. Earthed sender; nothing. Tried another gauge; nothing. Replaced some wiring and cleaned up earths etc second gauge; earthed sender =full tank, replaced wire onto sender; bingo! Cluster back in, firewall back in, engine back in. A very constructive evening!

    Thanks for the help :)

  9. Oh, just need to see what wires I disturbed during my repairs which means the lights are permanently on! :)

    ....tomorrow!!

  10. Just to report on my fuel gauge fix. Gauge and sender seemed OK but the voltage from the stabiliser unit was only 2.5 V. I sent off for a replacement from Megabug and this gives 5.2 V. I now show a full tank.

It would have been nice to fix the original since I the diode costs only about 40p but I don't have time to experiment. Maybe later.

  11. I'm sure this has been covered before but I can't seem to find exactly what i'm after.

I have a 1972 (late bay not cross over) bay and the fuel gauge doesn't work at all, the needle shows the tank as empty with ignition/engine on. The van is parked on a narrow street, on a hill, half on the pavement so taking the engine out and fire wall isn't possible to test the gauge/sender as noted above. Also there is no hatch above the tank for easy access to the sender.

Is there a simple test to diagnose whether the fault lies with the gauge or the sender that can be carried out with access to the gauge only? i.e. from looking above it would appear I could put a temporary wire to ground (mimicking one from the sender) on the back of the gauge (which connection on the gauge should this be?) the gauge should read full right?

    Any pointers much appreciated.

    cheers
