Fuel filler elbow replacement

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by bertie78, Apr 7, 2013.

  1. What a nightmare....... Thought it was going to be a easy fix- didn't bank on the old one being held on with a jubilee clip..... Then after a lot of tight space fiddling and swearing managed to get it off, only realised what a nightmare it would be to get the new one back on... Arghhhhhh!!!!!

need to do mine but have hands like shovels so doubt i could do it alone, did you do the other pipe too, and what was the new elbow like? i've heard there are some poor quality (wrong length?) ones about, who did you get it off?

Where did you get the elbow from?? I went to replace mine in 2010 while I had the tank out but the one I was sold was to small in diameter for the metal filler pipe.

Also the big rubber pipe at the bottom was perfect for mine but on another I went to do was about 1/2" too short.

  6. No didn't do the other pipe .... That's definitely an engine out job. Got the elbow from JK , diameter seems ok, can't really tell about fit .... Just so glad to get it on....the screw holes lined up when it was held against the old one and seemed the same overall size.

  7. As you have a type 4 motor you could replace the other pipe with the engine in situ, it's not easy but it is doable. Your old elbow was certainly in a bad way so I would be inclined to check that other pipe and the tank vent pipes sooner than later.

  8. I replaced the other pipe without taking my engine out.

Managed to get my firewall out by about three inches at the top and then did it by feel with one arm through firewall gap and one through the paint tin lid hole.

Don't remember it being at all difficult - just time consuming and fiddly with lots of repositioning of myself to get my arms in the the right places.

  10. Agree about the type 4 did mine with engine in anf firewall slid back as far as it would go - still tight fit for both hands but eventually managed it. It looked fine while it was in situ but once out you could see how badly perished it was - well worth doing

  11. Tried to change the breathers behind the firewall last weekend .... Have a look at my " cold and stupid" thread from last week;-)

  14. I can see the elbow on JK,s site but where do you get the other pipe from?
