Fuel delivery issues

  1. Type 4 2 ltr, weber progressive carb, electric fuel pump.

    Had a few cut outs after a couple of hours of driving recently. Always at idle (although had a juddering under load on our Cornwall holiday). When it cuts out its as if it just runs out of fuel . Any attempts to start straight away are futile, however if it's left for 10-15mins it starts back up again.....

    So worth noting that there's always been plenty of fuel in the tank, the tank doesn't appear to have any gunk in it as I've had a peek with a torch, the fuel filter is new and looks clean.

    Is the fuel pump goosed? Is it a carb issue?

    Any help appreciated fellow late bayers
     
  2. Next time it stops try popping the pipe off the carb. See if pump us actually pumping fuel. Do it in a cup and disconnect coil

    Fuel metering valve worn out causing flooding at idle. Which takes ages to clear especially when it is sitting on a Type 4 engine without heat risers feeding really hot exhaust gas under the inlet manifold to boil off petrol puddles.

    The valve is about £9.50 from Dellorto.co.uk plus vat and postage, the 1.75mm version would be standard.


    Happens on my progressive about every 15k miles. Even on a T1, if it stops shortly after starting in the morning before it warms up, it can take minutes of cranking to clear the puddle of petrol.

    Also check your electric fuel pump pressure should be in the 3psi region, and not higher.


    Long term recommendation would be to save up for a twin carb setup.

    breathers blocked. vacuum in system. next time it happens undo your fuel cap. if you hear a hiss, you've sorted it. should then start after a few turns of the key.
