Fuel Breather Pipes...

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Beynon5, Oct 29, 2014.

  1. Hello,

Been changing the fuel breather pipes on the van (all done now) however the T piece... I dont have a oil/air filter in the van so do I just block off that T piece or will I cause a vacum problem?

Can find many threads on how to/why to change them but not what to do if the T isnt in use..

Can I just connect one bit of pipe instead of the T piece?

    Thanks in advance!
    Chris

how can you not have an air filter? i needs to go into there for deffo.

  3. No I've got a air filter.. Ive got a pancake one.. I meant I haven't got a oil bath air filter.. sorry my backwards explaining!

you just need to drill a hole in the top of the pancake and fasten a fitting that will enable you to pipe into it then

  6. Ah I've actually got a spare point under the filter with nothing attached.. I guess that explains where it should go! Thanks!

i think you may have to fit a breather box as well

  8. Ah ok, so I cant come out of the T piece directly to the air filter?

  9. Yes you can ...shiney breather boxes are for pussies

  10. Haha I'll go connect it up now! Thanks guys!

    This.
No need for a breather box.

Ours is connected into the carb as the filter didn't have a hole.

  13. All sorted now, I took the feed from the T piece into the air filter ! :) thanks again!

  14. Careful with that - the port you've used might be intended for distributor vacuum advance. Dunno whether using this to connect the breather could cause it to run lean (and therefore too hot)?

Hmm, we have a 009 dizzy so no vac. I think the vac advance port is blocked off. Anyone else have thoughts on this?

  16. If you've got a standard Solex carb, you may have one or two vacuum ports on the carb, one ported vacuum and one manifold vacuum. Or you may just have one ported vacuum port. Both should be blocked off if you're not using them.

The tank vent line shouldn't be connected to either of them. It needs to be plumbed into the air filter, as above.

Cheers for that @snotty, I'll get it sorted ASAP. Out of interest what effect would my current setup have on the engine then?

  18. Hard to say. It'll likely upset the mixture in some way, as manifold vacuum may be sucking fumes out of the tank quite vigorously. The dissy port is on the LH side of the carb, the manifold vacuum port (if you've got one) points straight at you from the rear. One or both need bunging up with a length of vac hose with a self-tapping screw stuck in the end (the traditional method :)).

Yes it's connected to the manifold vac port in that case. I'll bung it up.

Ah, the big one underneath - cat amongst the pidgeons - that's intended for your crankcase breather, you need to add another for your tank breather, assuming you have a single carb. Where does your crankcase breather route to now?

Better still would be to hunt for a second hand standard airbox to suit your stand - if it's a round plate - oil bath, or if more like a shelf bracket a paper element one. Both work well and both allow you to replumb your warm air intake to make it run better in the cold weather and also your crankcase and tank breathers.

If your crankcase breather is allowed to breath into the engine bay, your heating air will contain some of it's contents.
