Front beam rebuild

  1. Got the steering pin out, the spring washer has scored the face of the mount, I presume this is normal and to be expected?

I suspect someone's been in there before as there's some damage on the metal around the bush you can see in pic.

The bushes must come out downwards is that right? And I can just use a socket that fits to drive them out?

  2. It’s easier to wind out the bush with some threaded bar, washers or well fitting socket, far easier than hammering although with the beam off the van it is easier than lying on your back!

  4. Thanks chaps, used a plug socket as a drift , just the right fit!
Finish cleaning it all up and get some rust killer and paint on it this week hopefully

  5. May be a daft question but for painting the beam I have the option of rustoleum brushed on , or rattle can primer and topcoat.
Is one better than the other for any reason?

  6. I Ike the Rusto option. It levels out nicely. If you're concerned, prep it and stick some etch primer on first.

  7. Got a couple of those castle nuts with a split pin through that don't want to play with me, is it easier just to cut the nut off?
Also a couple of balljoints where the nut is just spinning the joint, if I get a splitter on it to take up the slack then I'll get the nut off?
(I haven't got a splitter yet as the rest I managed without...)

  8. Also noticed the steering damper (again, boge, couple of years old) has oil on the shaft
I don't see anywhere else it can of come from , so it must be leaking, ??
    It's getting stupid now

  9. Rustoleum will take a while to harden. Depends upon when you are going to put the beam back.

  10. Good point.
At my speed of work it'll be sodding months though

  11. No rush the weather is bloody miserable ... just right for camping
By the time you get it back on the road will be time to do an oil change ... you can have the Halfolds oil I have if you want it.

  12. Take it off and give it a workout. If it still feels stiff, should be ok. Shocks can weep slightly and still be ok.

  13. How long would rustoleum take to harden if I brought the painted article inside and put a heater on it?

  14. 24-36 hours would be ok in my opinion in a cold garage so less I'd expect in a warm house.
You could use acetone to thin it and go with more thinner coats. The acetone will evaporate and it'll dry quicker being thinner too.
    @paradox is your man.

  15. Ha ... bet your house is full of old half painted VW spares ... outside in the cold it could be a couple of weeks.

  16. The dining room is full of bikes too. I'm a lucky girl. ;)

  17. What’s the conservatory situation? Still full of engine bits?

  18. You really need to dry it in the same place you paint it
It’s a big awkward thing to be moving about especially when it’s covered in wet paint.

Paint it indoors! Sure the missus won’t mind. The most I’ve annoyed Max so far was rebuilding my fuel pump in the living room!

  20. Less cluttered than when you last saw it! There is the not so small matter of a beam on the floor though!

Rome wasn't built in a day & all that jazz...
