Fridge options?

Discussion in 'Camper Conversions' started by SkutterBob, Jan 31, 2015.

  1. I am in a bit of a dilemma about which type of fridge to go for:

2-way. 12-240v Easier to fit but runs off leisure battery

3-way 12-240-Gas. Needs someone who knows what they are doing to fit, but better for weekends away off-grid.

I think that is it. What experience does everyone have with the above? How long does the 12v fridge last on a 110amp battery? Is the hassle of fitting the gas version worth it?

    Cheers

if you always use hook up a 230v is the best
If you have gas and sometimes use hook up a 2or3 way fridge
If you only have 12v a compressor fridge

A 12v non compressor fridge will kill your battery so you only use 12v with the engine runing

  3. Thanks @matty - I should have searched more.

  6. I have a Waeco CR-65, its a 2 way and its excellent. Went round France with it last year, during the day it would be running off 12v and the battery coped with it fine, in the evenings we will have arrived at another campsite and it got plugged into the mains. Had a freezer compartment too, which actually kept things frozen!

I chose a 2 way because otherwise I'd have had to have sorted out the 2 things you also need for a 3 way; (a) a gas bottle somewhere to run it off, and (b) properly installed with ventilation, etc (which is difficult with a twin slider as there is no obvious place to back the fridge onto where you can get a vent in) so I went for the 2 way instead. Expensive, but worth it.

I had a compressor fridge in my T4 and it was ace. It ran on electric or battery.

  8. How long did you get on your leisure battery?

When the battery was newish we could get about 5 days, poss more. we then could top it up again by a fairly short journey. It was the westfalia fridge. We were living in the van so fridge pretty full too.

  12. Hi,

another idea: We use (up to 6 people, 2 adults 4 kids on our 2 week hols and days out/nights away) a couple of ford galaxy fridges i got off of preloved. Hers a pic i found on google of it

Can be used as a seat if necc and we move it about if we want space. From memory they cost about £40 each all in. Then I bought a 240v > 12v converter off of ebay for £3 and fixed it into a 12v £3 relay.
So 240>12v into one side of the relay & LB 12v into the other, as soon as we hook up it switches off of the LB (i.e switches across) to the mains fed 12v supply i.e fridge runs when were out and about and when we hook up the 12v fridge runs off the mains and my battery gets recharged - overnight normally.

To be fair its more of a glorified coolbox but it'll go for up to 3 days before the LB dies with no charge, it keeps milk, ham, beer and wine etc cold enough over a couple of weeks. It has a fan which you could argue is an annoyance but its minimal.

Before we leave we normally pack a few frozen items that we'd plan to eat a few days later as well to give it a boost.

I like the waeco ones etc but really couldn't justify spending more on an occasional use fridge than our day to day fridge freezer. Theres loads of 12v ones out there and the prices are quite good.

    Just an idea,
