Anyone with stock carbs and an original type-4 powered bus may have noticed there's a fitting above the battery to hold a cardboard duct with a jubilee clip. The hot air valve has a cold air intake on the RHS for when it flips over. Does anyone have the air inlet cardboard duct fitted from here up into the air intake above the battery? Does anyone know how it should terminate in the intake? Maybe in just ends or maybe there's something to stop the rain getting in? Maybe it's for certain climates and not others? Yes, I am bored.
This is the bracket, maybe there are more round the corner? My bus was a 1600 and doesn't have them/it. T25, but same purpose duct, if it's all there. This is where ALL the air feeding the carbs comes from. Better than the dingy corner where the thermostatic valve is?
Mine has two brackets, it looks like the same corrugated hose that is used on the snail fan would work. Sent from my SM-J330FN using Tapatalk
Wonder how far around the corner it should go? .....as far as the bottom of the vent I presume. Sent from my SM-J330FN using Tapatalk
I've only ever seen one fitted and I can't remember. Two brackets then. I'd guess it would end just about where the second bracket is, it the shelter but getting a good gulp of fresh air. Could make a difference sitting ticking over maybe where there's some hot air rising in the engine bay and the fan is sucking air but none is being forced in the "ears". I'm trying to think of lockdown things to do for the van that has everything...or maybe not.
Got a case of de ja vue, I looked at the valve yesterday and thought that something was missing.....I too am bored!
I have to say I'm not keen on all the cardboard ducting in the type-4 engine bay, something of an eyesore - what a mess the aux fan is let alone adding this big fat one. Then I guess if you have the fan it's already a done deal that the bay is clogged with the stuff. I'd be up for a couple of little fans, one each side if they were around the size of a snail carb balancer, you do need something extra to demist the screen.
You can just see the end of the pipe in this photo - I always though is was original but may not be but is at least 10 years old! Just gulps the fresh air... hasn’t got soggy.
As I've given up ( temporarily ) on the heating, I've removed the ducting and the snail fan...so much tidier and everything is much more accessible in the engine bay.
@mcswiggs Good to see one. I think it's lost a bit and someone rerouted it a bit without using the fixing to stretch it out a bit more. Or maybe I just can't see the clips on your photo? I never had one or a top hatch, or stock carbs or a type-4 engine until I fitted the one I have c/w DRLAs. And my oil cooler pipes block one side anyway. I'd reroute those pipes if their was a neat fan alternative.
To be fair, the last time I had it off (fnaghgh) I only put it back with a cable tie on the first bracket and left the second one free, so the pipe could have been bent around a bit more....
In mine here there's a corrugated plastic pipe which I'd assumed is original, but maybe not. It's zip tied on to the second bracket, but I've not bothered with the first. It's a push fit onto the air box intake.
The corrugated paper hot air pipe is about as long as T25 photo, fastened with cable ties and made a connection to air valve with a re-purposed aerosol can top to make a snug fit on valve.
So out of curiousity (and lack of knowledge) where does the other end of the pipe sit in relation to the air filters?
It's the cold air feed to the filter via the thermostat valve housing. The T25 pic up there ^ shows it, it's part of the air filter box. And looking harder at the T2 one that doesn't have the hose...
