Flasher relay advice please

  1. Just realised I took a photo of the underside of the fuse box. Does this help?

Two relays, good . I think the flasher relay is the smaller cubic one.
    The other relay looks unusual.
As for whats in the corrugated trunking, VW never used that !

  3. Thanks.
What would be the replacement part?

  4. The one on the left in the fusebox is your old flasher relay. Looks like someone's bodged another one on without taking the old one out?

Pull the old one out of the fusebox and see how many terminals it's got. I recall there is a difference between Euro and US spec, but I can't remember what it is.

    Early US flasher "relay".

I needed 5 relays to ape that, though it probably could have been done more simply. Using the brake lights as indicators is the US complication.

  6. Lol. That is an abomination, Steve. Could’ve fixed that relay!

You probably could and I think you offered at the time. :)

  9. This arrived today,
Any advice on whether it looks compatible and if I try it it won’t damage anything?

  10. I’d investigate your double relay arrangement and sort your wiring before just changing the relay.

  11. Well. After a very frustrating day looking at my wiring where nothing makes sense. Found a three way switch that I have no idea what it does!
The relay that I pictured appears to be connected to the horn!
The relays on the fuse box I think are related to the high beam as they activate for that.
I disconnected the fuse no 11 and lo and behold the indicators started flashing again. Put the fuse back and still flashing???? Go figure.
When they flash the sound comes from the relay in the fuse box so this must be the correct one.
In any case I now have a bunch of relays for sale, the thing works and I’m praying I don’t need any electrical work done in the near future!

thanks to everyone for their comments.

  12. That is most odd. Got a pic of the switch?

Horn relay - maybe had air horns added.

High beam relay : the two on the fuse box are high beam relay and flasher relay.

Now its working, go round checking that bits of wire are not at risk of rubbing on e.g. the handbrake lever. I had a fault where if I indicated left and did a hill start, the indicator fuse would blow. It turned out the indicator power feed wire had been worn through by the handbrake lever. So when the handbrake was pulled out hard, the short would blow the fuse when indicating.

  14. Update,
Driving home today and the indicators have now stopped working altogether along with the fuel gauge and the battery warning light has come on on the dash.
Main lights still work and radio etc.
    Any ideas?
