flange thingy for Heat exchangers on Type 4 engine

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Lime79, Nov 8, 2012.

  1. Does anyone know if there is an insert available that plugs into the top of the heat exchanger so that you can connect the heater hose that connects to the squirrel fan. The RHS hose keeps slipping off the back of the heat exchanger even though I have a steel screw clip attached - there doesn't seem to be as much metal on the RHS heat exchanger as there is on the LHS.... :(

  2. Is it rusted away? I only have about 7 or 8mm sticking up on mine, this is just enough if you use a skinny jubilee clip.

  3. Does it look like this?

  4. Is it the heat exchanger end or the engine bay side as per the pics ?

  5. New exchangers with at least 10mm space to fit jubilee clip. I've got 50mm aluminium hose that doesn't fit over the end of the heat exchanger at the rear of the engine as you look from the rear of the bus. Just seeing if there is a flange or joint that can be fitted into the round hole of the heat exchanger so that I can fit the aluminium hose on properly...

If you trying to use aluminium hose instead of the heat riser elbows it’s not standard so there are no flanges or joints available and you’ll have to make something. And if you do get the hose to fit how are you going to support the heat control valves?

You can see the riser that connects to the flexible pipe to the squirrel fan. Have you got this? I once bought a pair of old heat exchangers at Vanfest which didn't have them and had to transfer them over from my originals.

  8. Looking at that photo, it's the connection to the right Hand side of the exchanger e.g. The circular hole. I've got the heater boxes and elbows at the back of the engine (e.g. closest to front of bus) but I thought that the squirrel fan connects to the rear of the exchangers (e.g. Closest to the back of the bus) and this pushed hot air over the exchangers to the front of the bus?? I'm happy to change to cardboard tubing but thought this might be a fire risk. I've looked on VW Heritage site and they do a plastic connector which again I thought would melt from the exhaust temp..

if you are meaning the pipes that come out of the snail fan and then attatch to the exchangers to force extra air over the exchangers there are 2 adaptor riser pipes that fit the tops of the exchanger shell and poke up through the tinware the left side one by the alternator then has an additional adapter to convert oval to round so the flexi pipes from the fan fits.

  15. Sorry, should have mentioned that I have a Porsche upright fan conversion :-[

i'm confused now, how come you have a snail fan when it's not a type 4engine? is it retro fitted or some other engine like a porker or summat?

i saw you posted after i started......

i suppose you could sleeve a piece of pipe inside the exchanger and rivet it in place.....

  19. I also think that those oval risers have been blocked off due to the Porsche fan conversion but will have to wait until the morning so I can go outside and check....
apologies for the confusion made :-[
