Flange for heat exchanger

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by physiopro, Apr 15, 2013.

  1. Hi
I have a 1641cc flat 4 aircooled engine and have bought a new exhaust that requires me to bolt onto the heat exchanger rather than clamp! Apparently the big bore exchangers fit it but I don't want to buy new ones! Does anybody know if you can just by the flanges please???
    Cheers

  2. That sounds most odd. Is the exhaust a 4-into-1 job? These normally clamp onto the exchangers just like a stock exhaust.

I've never heard of a big bore heat exchanger.

  3. suggest you get a piccy up. What engine is it? type 1 or type 4 as type 4 silencers are flange mounted?

  4. The man said 1641, so assuming a type 1.

  5. Sorry for being slow guys, just mad busy in work! All sorted. Basically I have bought a twin silencer system inc header in stainless steel! ImageUploadedByTapatalk1366142785.337415.jpg

Normally on the type I engine heat exchangers the tube slides into the manifold with a ring on the tube and a clamp. This particular manifold has a two bolt flange! Initially I wanted to source standard 38mm bore flange that I could slide over manifold tube, mate manifold tube and manifold together then weld flange on to heat exchanger. However since then I have come up with a cunning plan which is........ Do away with both heat exchangers, replace them with vintage stainless steel J tubes which come with flanges as standard. I am going to fit a propex heater, either whale or propex and then duct hot air from that to windscreen amongst other areas so should be ok! I think.

    Thanks for replies
    Cheers
