Fixing doorcards

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by georgerunner, Aug 29, 2022.

  1. Hello all, I've knocked up some plywood doorcards for the front doors and want to fix them using the original holes, but with bolts/screws through the ply.
Anyone have a clever method to ensure I drill in the right place?
Also what fixings do you recommend?
    Thanks,
    Mark.

Painted holes drilled in the door. Rubber bungs in the door. Big holes in the card, edges lined up with the holes in the door. Metal clips hooked onto edge of big holes..pushed into rubber bungs. No metal to metal contact, no rot because the paint is protected with rubber.
Other side of holes in card covered with vinyl.. thats the right way to do it.

Original holes too big for sensible screws. Animal would use rivnuts in holes. Place bits of pointed studding in rivnuts. Line up card, smack it onto ends of studs by thumping it onto studs by hand. Drill small pilot hole from back, from each indentation, bigger hole from front to fit bolt with a sharp wood drill spun fast.

  3. Mark lines around the door, evenly spaced around the perimeter of the card to drill between the existing huge holes.

Use self tapper screws with collars, if you need slightly longer screws then use counter sunk type and cover them with plastic screw caps available for pennies at Wilco etc.

At least this way, your additional holes dont stop somebody doing it the OG way next time.
