Fixed ticking tappet!

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Clive Neilands, Sep 8, 2015.

  1. One of my tappets still ticked even though I adjusted it? Decided today to swap the rockers from 1 and 2 with 3 and 4.
Ticking is now gone! Could it have been the rocker actually moving against the spring causing the ticking sound.Must have been.?

I think it would make a bit more noise than a ticking if it was.

  3. It sounded a little deeper tick than a rocker, must ha e been that because its gone now?

It is quite likely. After all people with HD rockers without springs but with bolts and shims can suffer quite bad clicky rockers as they bounce backwards and forwards. Mine clicks even though the gaps are correct and I went HD because the spring disintegrated expensively... It was the final straw that wrote off the crank and flywheel as the flywheel shook loose with one intermittently closed exhaust valve.

  5. Keep an eye, or an ear on that. See if you can identify which valve. Probably wont be but lose valve seats can cause intermittent problems. Ive had one come loose on initial starting on a rebuilt motor before now.

  6. It was constant, never disapeared, until now. When i broke the rocker a few months ago it left a little mark on top of the valve, maybe this was making the rocker slide off slightly.
Its 100% quiet now even after an hours drive, drove it normal for 30 minutes and then pushed it really hard up to 150kmh a few times.
I am sure itmust have been that because by swapping them over its cured it.
This motor just gets better and better, quieter now too.
