Fitting Saab seats

  1. Hi, got hold of a nice pair of Saab seats for our bus and wondered whats the best way of fitting them, especially the drivers seat, do I need to remove the old runners that are welded to the floor?? Thanks Dave.

  2. Hi Dave.

Best name by the way. I have fitted 2saab seats in the front. They sit on top of my runners perfectly. You do need to drill a couple of extra holes.

The Saab runners sit exactly on top of the vw ones.

These are the ones I have fitted.

Not ideal if you are tall. I am 5"10 so not bad at all. And if you are to short you won't reach the pedals.

Well worth doing as they are very comfortable. If you need more info. Let me know.

    Dave.

  3. brilliant ,I was looking through the threads at what to replace my vans seats with we have very dirty and wonky ford seats I think...........Row goes off to search for saab seats !

  4. Don't fit SAAB seats!!!

The picture below shows an original T2 driver's seat, and behind it a replacement SAAB seat. The latter is too high and even if you are average height, you'll find your sightline is just below the top of the windscreen! Additionally, your legs may well be toughing the underneath of the steering wheel!
Go the "sportcar seat" route, as they usually have a much lower height above the runners, I settled for a pair of MR2 seats and they're just the right height

My eventual choice is below, MR2 seats. They great!

Note in the above photos the distance of each seat below the door grab handle.

  5. That first picture is really useful - we'll eventually get round to new seats as our are mightily uncomfortable (don't know what they are, apart from rock hard..). We'll have to do some proper research though, as I'm 5'1" and mr moosey is 6'1" ....

  6. I went for Porsche 924 seats, like the MR2 they fit great and are low enough do tall people can fit and short people can reach the pedals! Highly recommend them.

  7. Yeah the Saab seats are quite high up. But I could not turn them down for £25 and they are very comfy.

  8. no that is a great price but jsut ensure you dont strain your legs long term, if you find them too high up and your knee is bent at a funny angle, might be worth look at reducing the foam padding and lowering the seat cushion a bit, not hard but you need to strip the seat down, probably not worth the faff for £25!

Porsche 924 / 944 seats are the way forward. Comfortable and still have a slightly retro look.
I fitted Saab 9000 seats and they were bloody awful. I spent every journey looking at the sun-visors or the top of the cab door.

  10. I'd agree Saab seats are comfy (and easy to fit - I'd take the existing runners off), but as above there is the height issue. I bought a set but never fitted them as, being 6' 3", I was looking at the top of the windscreen most of the time. Still worth it if you're a short arse about average height.

  11. I was given some lovely Saab seats for free and fitted them in, it would have been rude not to!

I always think about something my grandad used to say which was never turn anything down however rubbish it might be because one day they might give you something good ;)

I was pre warned previously by the same TLB'ers warning you in the previous posts that they were a tad too high and agree they are but they are also very comfy :)

It's the eye level which is a tad too high for me!

When the time is right (funds allow) I shall be going down the porka seat route!

    The choice is yours :)

Best upgrade for me was late westy highbacks , comfy , have the added protection of head restraints ,made for the job and fit straight on the early runners

  13. Not to mention the injuries from the back of the steering wheel in a collision - think about it !!!!

I grabbed a pair of saab seats for my van.. Im 6'4 and yes they were to high. I st to work and removed the original VW runners from the floor and binned the bolt on runners on the base of the saab seats ... then the work started, I was having them reupholstered so I stripped them and modified the saab pressed steel bases. Its limited to around 3/4 of an inch but all in the final height isnt to bad.. even with stock seats I would have a we problem.. as it is now with the saab seats my head is clear of the roof liner and my sight line is around 3/4 of the way up the screen..

when you remove the runners there is a small channel with a c channel stiffner.. basically you can chop the channel level and plate the open section and put the c channel stiffner inside the frame base... its easy when you have the bits in front of you..

My seats will be fixed in possition as I dont expect anyone else to be driving it

  15. I am lost now ..............I am 5'8 or 9 ( who knows) and Mick is 5'10...............

  16. Thanks for all the info guys, sat the seats in tonight and sat on them and they don't seem too bad for me, Sarah may struggle on the height / pedal reach will see what they are like when they are bolted in and then make up my mind. Dave.

  17. I'm slightly over 6' and have fitted SAAB 95 seats having previously removed the original runners. I don't find them too high at all and, because they have a tilt and slide function my wife can easily reach the pedals.
