  2. Wd40 my man n lots of it ;)

  3. Good luck with the job. Last time I did it, it took 4 hours!

The previous time the garage charged me the equivalent to 45 minutes work !

Squirt loads of penetrating oil on overnight beforehand

  4. Plus gas penetrating fluid on the nuts and bolts and be carefull not to snap any studs off
    Good luck with it

  5. Something that is easier on a type 4 for once as you can shear all the bolts - cut em off ... and it doesnt matter!

Agree with the penetrating fluid. Have a blowtorch handy too.

  8. Make sure you apply graphite grease to all the studs, then it comes off a doddle next time!!

  10. If its not your daily get the plusgas on a few days before and repeat and then repeat again. I think the worst bit was getting the pre heat bits to meet with the bits on the exhaust. And that was a I quote "quality German Bla Bla Bla" :)

  12. Hijacking this a bit as its a type one the OP is enquiring about so sorry dude. Agree with the soaking but get a wire brush onto any protruding threads also if possible otherwise you will get the nut part way up the thread and it will shear off!

As for type 4 silencer. Tow bar shouldnt be an issue. Two nots each side very easily accessed from blow. Rear tins off to get to the top nuts but sure ive done it without. All 13 mm nuts but if you have to split em then its still not difficult. A tip when putting the new silencer on is as said above to get some graphite of copperslip on there but all the nuts have to go on before you start tightening and you need to go around all of them and get them on a few turns before going too far or you will fall foul of the nut being pushed into the exchanger and it wont turn. You will see what I mean.

  15. If you can get hold of some brass nuts (most fastener places will have them), slap 'em on. I don't know why VW used steel on the exhaust, while everyone else of that era used brass.
