Fitting new outriggers

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by jazz625, Jul 23, 2014.

  1. Doing my normal weekly inspection, it obvious to me the front outriggers are going to need doing at some point.
I've not fitted them before, but I'm keen!

The van has a belly pan fitted, so just looking for some tips, links to other threads, etc.
I'm guessing that before I start on the outrigger, the pan has to come off.
But not keen on cutting it off since I will be planning to put it back on.
So how do I get it off?

After that, where is the best point to cut the current out rigger?

Many people cut away as little of the pan as possible to repair the outrigger then patch the belley pan after. The alternative is to cut it right off and face the music. You might even find you don't really have what most would describe as a chassis at all. :)

Check out gninnam's resto thread to see a weekend turn into a decade... (exaggerating a bit)

  3. Cheers. Think I'm ok on that front. Just a small hole. Rather sort it out now before it looks like that!

That looked fine before the belly pans were removed. The handbrake cable wouldn't feed through it's conduit - the rest is history...

    Just sayin.
I sincerely hope yours isn't like this.

Buy the autocraft jacking points too buddy they're the best by miles. Cool air stock them cheaper than autocraft and we get a 10% discount on top. Speak to @bigrich :fool:

  6. Seconded the autocraft ones are really well made

  7. I pretty much get all my stuff from coolair. They are close to me, and a ver friendly bunch they are too.

  8. Just done the passenger side on mine... Cut a 8" piece out of the belly pan and put a cover on after.
Amazed how good condition rest of the floor and chassis seems to be when I looked in!

  9. Bought mine from jk...£47

  10. As do GSF/VeeWee stores, listed as best quality not autocraft

  11. Yeah, its the passenger side on mine that needs doing.
I got under the van today armed with a torch. There are gaps in the belly pan, and from what I can see it all looks good in there.
Looks the the previous owner looked after it well, and coated everything in clear waxoil.

I know about the history of the van anyway, and was with the same family for 25years!
Van is a 78, so thats almost from new (well, relatively anyway...).
