Fitting late mechanicals to an early early?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Joker, Nov 24, 2013.

  1. The earliest bay I've had my hands on is a 72 crossover so haven't really taken too much notice of the differences. I'm guessing different beam, drums etc. rears hubs and all. Are the parts interchangeable, in that could I take the mechanicals off a late 76 bay and swap straight over to an early early to give disc brakes, servo etc?
    :)

  2. Not massively sure ,I think early beams are different bolt centres but you could use late bay spindles to give discs , rear again I think it depends on year but swop the whole lot

    How early?

If you have 2 vans side by side you can swap the lot, but if your buying bits, the drums are different, backing plates, shoes and drive shaft through the hub on the back are all different, on the front if you change the trailing arms with hubs discs etc all attached its a straight swap, hoses are different of course. Anything servo related would need to be made to fit

  4. 1967-68 had the bolt holes on the front beam/chassis in different position ,this position fits split screens ,the bay changed the bolt holes in 1969 to fit all bays 69-79....because from 67 it is a ball joint beam all stuff like disc brakes hubs can be swapped ,including the rear with the new irs..

  5. as said above beam bolt spacing is different up to 69 and also the torsion tubes are closer together iirc, rear hubs have different bearings etc but could be fitted as a complete units with brakes and driveflanges etc to a early but 68-69 spring plates have split torsion bar splines and early a arms are different. so you need early a arms and spring plates with late hub and brakes to the rear. driveshafts are the same

  6. Side by side, 76 to 67...
    :)

  7. And as I know you're already aware, only a lawnmower engine will fit in the engine bay without modification. Type 4 will require some cutting/adaptation of the engine bay.

  8. Yes I know. Thankfully I'm younger than her indoors so 72 vintage is good as I get to advance the technology

I don't care of she wants to drive a slow bus, that'll blame her for being old
