Fitting Indicator Stalk

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by jmarchant1970, Jan 20, 2024.

  1. My 73 LB came stripped and without an indicator stalk. I couldn’t get a used one so bought w BBT 5 wire switch from JK. It looks correct and matches the wiper stalk. The wires however and completely different. Anyone know which wire joins which. As per your help and wisdom is appreciated. [IMG]

Look closely at the pictures. The colour code on the BBT wires looks close to the stock connector..
    My interpretation..
    SWITCH end to bus connector

    Black/white to black/ white.
    Black/green to black/green
The green/white ( looks like common) to black with green bands.

Headlamp flasher relay connector.. the switch connects its brown/white wire to its brown wire (brown is conventionally chassis) to flash, the relay has a brown/white wire going to it on my bus on another connector..

So your connector has a pair of brown wires next to the indicator wires which are not on my bus.

If they read as zero ohms to chassis they are chassis so the switch brown wire joins at the connector, and the brown/ white is in another connector.
On my bus the brown goes off to an earth screw.

Brown/white to brown/white on another connector on the - relay should click if it is grounded.

This is my switch showing the stock colours and where they are attached to the switch.

This is how the semicircular clamp plates go .. plate with pip to slot in column. You can see the grooves where PO's had it wrong...

@mikedjames or anyone else really, do you know by any chance if there are spares available for those C shaped plates in the housings ?

  7. I`ve seen a couple on Ebay recently for about a fiver but can`t for the life of me find one again but they`re certainly out there ...

I would try FBI VW in Swansea or Megabug. They might have some of them.
I note that on eBay at the moment a commercial vendor is selling the housing without the C clamps .. but doesnt list the clamps ..

  9. Buttys Bits list them for an prototype bay. Dont know if they're the same as a LB

    Thanks, I'll check with him...

Edit: Looks similar but missing the little anti-rotation tab...

The crossover steering column on a late bay is a prototype bay column. There are only two basic designs of steering column on the bay window. Original with metal bits and post oil crisis cost down/improved with more plastic :)

The missing pip a pity, as that tab does a much better job than insulating tape or similar at stopping the switch cluster from rotating. A blob of weld, filed down could fix it.
