Fitting electric pump to washer bottle.

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by petergyoung, Aug 20, 2011.

  1. Pressure system loses pressure within hours. Have checked that all outlets are screwed up tight. Do I try and find the air leak or just abandon the system and fit an electric pump? Any tips links etc would be appreciated. Cheers in advance! :) :) :)

A few hours? lucky man, mine lasts a few seconds before depositing water down your leg from under the steering column.....i would imagine 30 plus years of aging of the pipes is your problem too, it's highly unlikely to be the bottle so replace the pipes and you should sort it, i'm hanging on until last minute mot time to do mine because i can't get to the pipes on the stalk under the steering wheel (you have to take it off) so i may just do summat of a flick switch instead.....

  3. I got a small water pump from Halfords, drilled out the outlet pipe in the water bottle to the size of the pump nozzle and siliconed the two together. I then changed the hoses and now have some very effective washer jets. I want to wire everything up to the original switch next. I believe there was a thread on how to do this before the crash if anyone can remember.

  4. Maybe hours was a bit of an exaggeration! Minutes then!

  5. Such a pity all the threads were lost! I tried searching on the prototype bay forum but no luck. :( So pumps that are on Ebay / Halfords etc are not self priming?

think i read summat on the old forum that they weren't self priming but a non return valve could be fitted? can't remember....i'm thinking of getting one off an old car at the scrappy.

  7. just fit a non return valve, halfords sell them as I have just been there to get some washer hose.

plus fit the pump lower than the bottle then it will be gravity fed from the bottle.

  8. you can get cheaper pumps in Maplin, Halfords are very expensive.

  9. The pump I got from Halfords was £14. It was an actual replacement windscreen washer pump. If I go in tomorrow I may try and sneak a picture of the packaging.

  10. I fitted an aftermarket washer bottle complete with electric pump and put a toggle switch on the dash

  11.
  12. I got a pump off ebay, and a switch from maplin and fitted the switch where the pump thingy was on the stalk, total cost less than £15, and no extra buttons, the one way valve sounds like a good idea though, as mine takes a couple of seconds to pump the water up to the screen.

  13. Thanks for all the suggestions. Just been on fleabay - there are lots of pumps on there starting from £6.50 for a Polo pump.

  14. Well I had the same problem so I took the pump part out of the switch on the steering and put a micro switch in it's place then got a little pump of eBay cheap and can mounted easily this takes away the pipe from under the column I took the idea from another member of here put he had a different steering column to me so I had to change the design abit . Hope these pics help , ow and I did have to trim the micro switch head down a bit as it was on all the time and I've not yet fitted it to the van put it's been tested [IMG]

  15. :) Thanks Baybug - very helpful! Have just been on Ebay and ordered the pump. Be good to get a bit of water on the screen again!!

  16. I just fitted a simple washer pump next to the original washer bottle. replaced the original hose from the water bottle, and wired a 12 V switch mounted on the dash next to the steering wheel.

    Works with no issues

  17. I was trying to keep it like it was with the switch ( well just the look ) and keep the bottle to .
Just need to fit it now

  18. here is my setup:

I have also fitted new tubing all the way up to the nozzles as the old stuff was slightly perished!! I also fitted a non-return valve to stop the water draining back.
