Fitting a new cab headlining

  1. Okay, I know there is some stuff on here about fitting a new headlining but as usual I can't see anything that looks like my van. Lilly is a German import '79 bay.

Previously the rear was glued onto hardboard but the front just had polystyrene glued to the roof then fabric glued to this. The fabric covered the inside of the van. Floor to ceiling and over

I want to just bring the headlining down to the top of the doors now but I haven't got any retaining clips or holes for the metal bars/bows. Is it a case of fitting hardboard to the front and covering, if so has anyone got any advice or dimensions or how I finish it off. Pictures would be brilliant.

    Cheers

  2. The bows just fit in the original metal of the van, no holes !!

  3. Mick, thanks for the reply. Do you mean the channel at the top of the section. That's what we thought but the bars just lie horizontal with no tension to them. Could have been given the wrong ones at the scrappers I suppose but they assure me they are the right ones....are they supposed to have a bit of plastic on the end. The bars that I have, have a slight bend at each end.

    Cheers

  4. There is a small lip they sit on, put it roughly where it goes, then arch the bow whilst pulling the end inwards towards the vans inner frame and away from the roof panel, it just sort of sits on a lip somehow

  5. But should they be a tight fit, the ones I have just seem to lie there like. I imagined I would have to spring them in some how or do they simply offer shape through the slight bends on the end once the lining is pulled tight

  6. With regards to the absence of retaining clips I presume I'm to glue the material to where the clips should have been. Any suggestions on glue.
    Cheers

  7. there are different length tension rods ....you might have got ones that are too short or have been cut down

the rubber caps on the end hold the rods in place using friction to stop them slipping once under tension

As yours seem slack, I'm assuming you have put the ends of the rods right into the corner of the channel/roof?

If you feel in the 'channel' you will find it is not level, there is a small step. The ends of the rods should sit up against the step in the lower part (away from where the roof meet the channel if that makes sense?) ....that is how you get the 'bow'

...until you put tension on the front and the back you will find they will flop around a bit

as keith says, you can buy the gripper strip (pop rivit it in place) .....it will make a much better job of finishing off the headliner than glue along the sides, as you will find it hard to make the small adjustments needed to get all the creases out and maintain tension using glue
