Fitting 356 steel Wheels/ 77 late bay

Discussion in 'Modified Shizzle' started by Simply, Jun 2, 2023.

  1. Looking to fit early 944 front hubs, Brakes will be boxster non S .

I started out with Flat 4 Fuchs in mind, but i quite like the steel wheels (Ive attached images). My question is, will these fit with the boxster calliper? or do I need to sell what I have purchased & use a kit such as wilwood offered by Fellows

    Daft question - why?

I have a Subaru engine and drive it pretty hard on occasion - mine is non servo - never thought the brakes were a weakness.

Just curious as to what you are aiming for?

  3. Not daft at all.

My insurer did suggest I upgrade after ej20 went in, aside from this i wanted to go 5x130 to fit fuchs ...and associated bling

  4. I cant see how the wide five, the second image, would fit in modern brake system like Brembo, wide 5 was designed in the days of drums, tho' CSP do a disc conversion kit for pre67 drum Bugs so they may have one for the Bay.

  5. That was my concern, although a bit late in the day!

I wonder if the calliper on the dual pattern kit would clear.

  6. The wide five wheel will need an adapter so that might give you some extra space vs the 5x130 wheel?

bottom line is that unless someone has the exact brake and wheel setup you’re going for you won’t know if it’s going to work until you try to fit it.

When i got my bay i also looked at brake upgrades, but tbh now i have the stock system working properly i can brake hard enough to lock up if i want.. the limitation is tyres/grip so adding bigger calipers wont make it any better (other than looks /bragging rights). I accept though if you're regularly storming through alpine passes then youre needs may be different.

Does the boxster caliper fit within the 15”? 356 rim? Or are these 16”?
Also consider adding adapters to rear can be a hassle if you’re lowered, obviously dependant on wheel offset, but most vans run pretty close to the rear arch lips.
