Firewall removal

  1. Ok so I have removed the six visible screws.... And either there is another hidden away or it has been glued in!
    The Haynes just say remove screws and pull out, yer, tried that... Ideas? Anyone?

    Have you removed the screws from underneath, by the gearbox hanger?
     
  3. On the under side theres two screws normally corroded and covered in muck

  5. Got it out! Now to clean and paint it!
    Then have I will have somewhere to mount the fuel pump and filterking!

  7. Give that filler pipe a good check over too bud as it looks like its been there a while, save you a job down the line chap :)

  9. 7mm, as I recall. Might be worth looking at your fuel sender while you're at it. In fact, take the whole tank out :)
     
  10. Yes, I would do all you can while you can get at it, certainly the filler connection, I would also do the filler neck, all possible with the engine and tank in situ (assume its a type 4 engine).
     
  11. Yes, a type 4, started off just going to install
    All new carbs, then with the old carb out, thought now let's have a look at the firewall, then came the breathers... Now I don't want to be taking the tank out... But I am very tempted.... But think you guys are right about the filler and neck
     
  12. dont forget the breather pipe sections up behind the spare wheel bowl.

  13. You can do the filler pipe with tank still in place. Take the paint lid off and although it is a bit of a git it is possible

I got to that stage, then thought bugger it, took the tank out, vacuumed all the dust out the hole the tank came out of, repainted all the tank and had good poke round and wax oiled everywhere, least you can say you have done it and tick it off your things to do while adding another thing to do at the bottom of the list...it's never ending with an old bus.

  16. Thanks guys, looks like tank out...
    Least that gives me the chance to sort out the fuel sender! And your right, I have taken a fully functional camper.... Done one job that has lead to another.... And now have a conservatory full of bits and a camper with no interior and most of the engine ancillaries in a box!

    Oh well... As long as its all back together for Glastonbury!

    PS. Anyone need approx. Eight gallons of unleaded?
     
  17. On a type four engine yes but its a right fiddle

    Ive done it on a type one engine once and it took me about 3 hours and ive got bendy arms and a body that can fit in an engine bay

    If the filler kneck needs doing then the breathers probably need doing aswell

    Its easier to drop the engine and inspect and do it all at once

    Dont blame me though when you find rot in the chassis legs and a weekend job turns into months whilst you paint everything fix the faults you didnt know you had and paint the engine bay;)
