Firetec install horizontal

  1. Hi,
following Hippyriches lucky escape i thought I'd post up a few images of my firetec install hopefully to encourage some more people to fit them.

I originally bought this when I had a standard carb and I was going to mount it upright on the left. Then i went twin carb and there was no room.

Contacted firetec and they said the bottles can be mounted horizontal as long as the outlet points up and it isnt tilted down.
There is a tube inside the bottle that curves to the side of the bottle opposite the outlet. the out side is usually marked with a dot denoting the bottom of the tube.

dead easy to fit. you just have to watch you don't put too tight a bend in the tube and support it well with cable ties. the extinguishant comes out with a considerable force. (First one i had I set of accidently right in my face so I know!)

You can see the horizontal mount fits nicely under the spare wheel well no problem.

I'd really encourage people to get this n o matter how good your pipework and wiring is. well worth the investment IMHO

    Cheers s

  2.

  3. Yep, got one of these myself. First mod I made.

Didn't think there was any point spending money on the bus unless you can protect it and the occupants. Which are my family.

Totally agree this is well worth doing. It could save your life and your bus. Lecture over, class dismissed. :)

  4. Thanks for this - you are a star!

Someone has cut most of our spare wheel well away by the looks of it when fitting the leisure battery.

Also - is the thing you have fixed it to at the top made of metal? We had something full of holes made of cardboard at the top of our engine bay - that is what kept smouldering even after we'd put the main fire out!

    Thanks again ;D

  5. I thought it was metal but I'll check that :headscratch2:

  6. Earlier busses have a pressed steel plates to hold the insulation back at the top of the engine bay and later busses have a fibreboard version

  7.
  8.
  9. gonna do mine over the weekend (hopefully)

  10. Dougal has one of these fitted and I was really quite pleased when I bought the van until I was chatting to the guy parked next to us at the BB race course at the weekend and he was saying you have to be careful as if your engine smokes a bit it could be set off when there isn't a fire, and your engine's then covered in foam and it's really hard to get off/could damage your engine, which has worried me a bit since

    D

  11. They work by the tube melting and discharging the foam so theres no worry from a smokey engine

  12. The fire tec ones are set off by heat and not just an engine running hot. Flame heat. The clever bit is the pipe will rupture at the nearest point to the heat source and deliver the extinguishant right at the source of the fires at pressure (why you need to tie it down well)...

    Cheers

  13. I'm going to do mine after I've rebuilt the engine. :)

  14. finally got round to fitting mine today - only to realise i had no cable ties ...
but at least the bracket is now fitted ...

note - my tatty looking engine bay - hence why i have engine bay envy at the moment

What is that wire all about at the top of the bracket?? I'd drill another hole further down to secure it properly.

  16. yeah i am thinking about doing that before i put the unit in.
only problem is my screw bit snapped in 2 whilst drilling the first hole

  17. Hi,

I got one of these a long while ago, and have forgotten which way up it's meant to be, whats this dot then? A paint mark on the outside of the bottle is it? I'll probably be fitting in the same place, so dot at the bottom of the bottle, nossel up?

    Cheers,

    Alistair

  18. A worthwhile mod IMHO before fitting these firetec thingies is to install a fuel cutoff valve. £35 well spent.

And change your fuel lines, of course... :)

I totally agree Snooty about the replacement of the fuel lines. I replaced mine that are 3 years old. I'm amazed at how tatty they looked. Totally serviceable but it does make you wonder. Now part of my 3 year plan in the service schedule.
