F.I fuel pump, pressure requirement...?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Joker, Aug 18, 2013.

  1. I'm not sure if I have a faulty pump, but it seems furling is the issue I have. Does anyone know the output pressure? Are these self regulating or is a regulator required within the system too? I don't want to fork out for the £180 replacement so want to find a cheaper altrrnative.

The system has a pressure relief valve on the right side of the engine that dumps excess fuel back to tank, I have had to buy a pump yesterday £178 :( fitting it today. As mine was seizing intermittently .
Ratwell has some part number cross referencing but if your looking for new I think you will struggle. What's the problem you have?

  3. It won't start. I fitted new injectors, and a new cold start valve. It worked ok and then stopped working. I can't hear the pump going but I also think its got gunk in the tank. Going to start with a tank drain and new filters and work up from there. There are inline fuel injection pumps on eBay for £40, 3 bar to 8.5 bar. If this is suitable I'll look for that.

try the double relay on the left side of the engine bay, the left one of the 2 is for the fuel pump, crack open the relay and manually operate it, if the pump goes then give it another go ;)

trying to find the fuel pump spec for the original, but for £40

found this for £5 less ;)

its also got the correct spade terminal instead of rings ones

    just gotta check spec

  9. So I know that Davidoft has a new working pump. Haven't had time to check mine yet, but when I turn the key there is a click from the left hand side of the engine bay, a solenoid/relay kind of click, but I can't see where one is? There are 2 plugs on the left hand if the fire wall which plug into what looks like an alternator voltage regulator?

    Anyone any ideas?

It's the double relay, on is for the fuel pump the other for the injectors, the left one is fuel pump has 2 reds a brown and some others the other has just white wires I think, anyhow left as you look into the engine bay is fuel pump if its clicking its working if the fuel pump ain't going then pretty good chance it's the pump

  11. The fuel pressure regulator is on the right hand side of the engine bay on the fuel return line. The pump has a check valve to stop fuel going back into the tank as well.

If you have a fuel pressure gauge you can put it on to the T off on the left hand side of the fuel injection rail.

To have the pump operate you need to move the needle in the air flow meter though.

That way you know if the pump is working I think it should be 30 psi when measured and when the engine is off it should hold that for a fair while after which is how you will know if the check valve in the pump is good or not.

I will search out the actual values and times.

  12. Cheers folks. Will have a play on it today

  13. Thanks to Davidoft for pointing me to the cheap eBay fuel pump. Just swapped it over, turns out it wasn't actually at fault. Threecountiesdubber (Graeme) just came round to check some of his FI stuff on my bus and found that the hose to the air flow meter was loose. Popped it back on and she runs sweet as a nut. Up until now I hadn't found it so I guess I probably never would have
