Good Morning TLB's The last 3 trips out in the bus i have had a exhaust stink somehow getting in ,and on 2 of the trips has given me a headache . The last time i had this occur was when i first bought it and there was no rear hatch rubber seal and vortexing exhaust from the Empi twin pipe was entering in ...and was instantly sorted when seal was fitted . The empi twin pipe exhaust system has always concerned me in the way the pipe exit at the rear rather than out the side as on the standard system . Firstly i will take off all the heater pods and pipes from the Heat /E to the Y piece and see what happens . Is it possible to have a crack inside the Heat Exchanger for exhaust to be fanned into the cab . i will also check the exhaust is not leaking somewhere maybe making it's way to the fan . So much for the Empi exhausts not lasting ..this ones been on for nearly nine years . Maybe i should just get a new one for starters . I will also block off the holes on the Y piece bracket to eliminate any possible swirling exhaust making its way into the cab . Anyone else had this happen ...iwill put new batteries in my C monoxide bleeper before i do anything .
Fit a carbon monoxide alarm . It's a silent killer . Odourless as such and kills people . The headache is probably a symptom of it . Don't drive till it's sorted
This ^^^^ They can rot the inner pipes on the exchangers and the first thing you'll know about it are the symptoms you're describing... Obviously check the exhaust is sealed properly but with it being a recent thing I'd say the inner pipes have failed. Ask me how I know ! Sent from my SM-G960F using Tapatalk
I would block of the heat exchangers first to eliminate them, although I have never come across one leaking internally, I'm sure it's possible! It's usually the tailgate seal as you have experienced before, or the engine lid seal allowing exhaust fumes to get sucked into the fan.
Usually the outside rots off heat exchangers before the pipes go. You should be able to hear an exhaust leak with the listening tube trick - use a length of hose to point at bits of idling engine , holding the other end to your ear. Another idea would be making a smoke pot (tin can containing something smouldering with a lot of smoke) and connecting that to the tailpipe and then looking for smoke leaks. Also useful in FI for intake leaks. You could nick an coloured smoke distress signal off a yottie but then everything within 10 metres will end up greasy orange.
I have alot of things to check and that idea with the pipe was one of them The right hand heat ex is a new old stock so can't think it would be that side . The left one is an original which is second hand ...both sides were stripped down to fillet out the asbo netting ...and at that time did not notice any faults visually ,but that was 2 years back . I am disconnecting all the original heating system as i am not impressed with its efficiency and the general stink ...whether it be exhaust or oily residue from inside the noisy cupboard . I don't use the bus much in winter, 5 times a month i would say ...and never put the heating on because of the smells and just wore a coat ..so iam not losing out as such . I think the type 4 is more likely to kick a stink out more than the type 1 1600 because of that stick thirsty snail fan . I did think of attaching a alloy convoluted pipe from the snail fan up to the air intakes at the side of the van ...but thought better of it in case it sucked in water when raining ...and causing something to go horribly wrong .
