Exhaust Conundrum

  1. My exhaust silencer has had its day, the rust has finally eaten through most of it and it's time for a new one. I was initially going to get this straight replacement from JK: J10083

A straight swap, new silencer for the old... but then I fancied the look of the 4 tip exhaust system they have: J10077

Will the 4 tip bolt on straight or require modification? I'm trying to figure out how its fitted from the photographs as the pipes seem to be a different configuration to the original. Anyone got any experience of fitting one of these?

  2. Forget the four tip - it'll strangle your engine and rust in weeks. Stick with stock.

  3. Keep standard or fork out for a stainless version if you have the cash but standard is always best.

  4. Dont go for the monza they are proper crap

What they said, don't get the 4 tip you'll be replacing it very quickly

  6. Well, thats a unanimous verdict! Stock it is...

Does it come primed and coated to protect from rust or will I need to apply a coat to it?

  7. I wouldn't bother, myself. They're not going to last that long, unless it's stainless. The back boxes tend to rot from the inside out.

The JK stainless single exhaust about £360 seems better than the empi twin quiet pack.

    1. The engine can rev more easily
    2. The exhaust is quieter at tickover but louder at speed
    3. It doesnt rust
    4. Although both are small bore the tubes on the stainless exhaust remain large enough to enclose the ends of the heater pipes exhaust outlets. The EMPI exhaust tapers back down .
    5. It fits properly
    6. The EMPI exhaust is heavy and waggles off the heater pipes.

    The downside

    1. Need to cut holes for the carb preheat
    2. It radiates more heat.
3 . It is close to the back tin ware bigger tubes just underneath
    4. It costs more

  9. CSI_Will, I have a second hand ernst exhaust and tail pipe you can have if you like, it's just taking up space in the garage. It has minimal surface rust only and would clean up really nicely. Was only on the van for a year and barely used so good condition.

    I am in winchester

  10. And if Stainless ,you may have situation (like on mine)where the engine rubber seal has to be repositioned due to it ,in original position touching on said exhaust(me not risking that one )

My 4 tip has been on for at least 8 years and is going strong. Looks and sounds good.

  14. Yours if you want it, will just sit gathering rust.

You can have a look at my stainless one on my bus and use this stock one until you decide if you want one and at least you can use your van this summer. Then you could donate it to a worthy cause like me!

  15. Yep empi stuff usually rusts well! I had a Monza and they didn't last long and then similarly a single quiet pack lasted 2 years, just a consequence of thin metal, heat and salt.

  16. I must say the EMPI twin quiet pack is a damn good exhaust, does what it it meant to, sounds good and looks better than stock.

BUT. I rubbed it down and painted three coats of ht paint on it and the paint has come off already and I have surface rust over almost the whole thing. Bare in mind that this is only a month or so old. Not impressed, I now need to remove it and clean it all up and repaint. If it happens again its going back to just kampers! Josh_JK

Empi stuff always rusts as soon as its unpacked; this is nothing new.

  18. Sounds pretty much standard to me :(. It will rust again...

  19. Well snotty, I bit Ben's hand off and picked up his surplus exhaust earlier. Will look at fitting it on tomorrow, fingers crossed its a nice and simple straight forward swap. Thanks guys!

  20. God, that was quick :). Only likely hassle in changing it is rusted stuff: rusty tinware screws (best take the back bit off) and rusty exhaust nuts on the heads. Go easy on them...good wire brushing & plenty of penetrating oil. The rest you can saw off ;)
