Euro grand tour...

  1. So we're off to Southern Italy in August, from Manchester. Around 3500 miles.

Every one of these jaunts I read about comes with a list of "...and then the engine blew all the studs from the case" type horror stories.

I've not had a major failure I couldn't fix at the side o the road in years. But. I've not done that distance in three weeks before.

    My list is this-
New master cylinder and brake overhaul with new pads etc all round (they need doing and my pattern master cylinder is rubbish)
Engine out, clutch, gearbox oil, service new ignition parts. Torque all major bolts and fasteners. New alternator belt and a cooling fan top pulley.

Tyres are nearly new so not too worried about them.

Spares box includes ignition bits, cables, belts and fasteners. Bulbs and euro travel bits.

What else should form part of my planning for a stress free trip?

  2. On big trips, in addition to what you have listed, I also carry a spare dissy, coil, regulator and fuel pump. Over the years I used a dissy cap, a voltage regulator and a set of new brushes for the dynamo.

I just give it a quick service and go.
