Essentials you carry.. Especially whilst abroad.

  1. Hi all,

I know I am new but being in the military means I travel around a lot. I am currently in Afghanistan and looking to get a camper when I get back. I have been in the 'dub scene' for a while and have been lurking about on here and Samba checking out the build threads in my downtime.

Anyways enough about me, being an old vehicle, there are those essentials you carry in the van for the quick fix by the roadside. Can we get a definitive list up, one for the day to day travelling around the UK and one for the longer trips please..I will update this top post as more and more gets added.

    Daily Driving.

    Longhaul.

    Cheers.

  4. We did longhaul in the summer through 4 countries. We took accelerator cable, brake cable, points, plugs, dizzy, coil, condensor, starter motor, bulbs (these are a legal requirement), oil & oil strainer gasket kit, hi viz jackets, breathalysers (well actually we didn't as Halfords had run out, but we should have done) and a warning triangle along with standard tools like sockets, pliers, screwdrivers, hammer, spanners.

Happily we didn't need any of them....would have been useful to prise the gear stick out to find the reverse gear we lost over France though ::)

It's kind of like an aptitude test:
This one and "What oil should I use?".....
Not really, I guess people only need the info once so it wasn't deemed worthy of a sticky. The first couple of pages would be full if every single useful fact was stickied.

I have broken down in France a few times due to lack of maintenance, lack of knowledge and turn the radio up it will fix itself. It comes down to common sense what to carry as we all know what our vans are likely to need, which when it comes to engines you sound like you have some.

Yes this has been asked before but then if you read all the crap threads from the start to present day its all been asked in one way or another but thats a forum for you.

Hopefully each time something new is added to keep it fresh.

You haven't hit a nerve at all, and no-one has taken anyone for a mug. I just fail to see what is so hard about using the search function?
There are plenty of things to worry about before which spares to carry.
