Right here we are on Walney Island just off Barrow. I'm driving down this rough beach road in second. Engine has stalled and won't restart. Stinks of petrol so I!m thinking I've flooded it. Was a bit of fuel dripping off carb. Tiny bit only. It's a stock carb tp 1600. Advice please dear people?

  2. Anything dripping from underneath?

  3. Mine did that when the engine was hot on a hot day- 1/2 hour later tried again with foot to floor on gas pedal and it fired up no problem.

    Needle valve stuck?

  5. First thing I'd check:

    -Ignition off
-Let it cool down a bit
-wire from coil+ to choke on RHS of carb off (best take it off at the coil so there's not a live wire flopping about near loads of petrol)
    -Air filter off
-Five screws on top of carb out
    -Throttle return spring off
    -Fuel hose off

Examine the top of the carb that's now in your hands. Pop the fuel inlet spigot in your mouth and blow on it. While you're doing that, use a finger to push the little button on the brass screw/nut with holes in on the other side of the carb. When you push the button, you shouldn't be able to blow through the screw/nut. You should be able to when you release your finger. If not, buy a carb rebuild kit and replace that part, it's a float valve.

If the float valve looks OK, it's time to run through your usual "does it have spark, does it have fuel, does it have compression, is the timing OK" checks, but try the above first.

Just teeny bit engine oil from sump plug. Nothing else. Stink of fuel now gone too. @cunny44 I know what you mean and that works well on mine for a hot start but that didn't work in this instance, just made more of a petrol stink.

  7. How is the oil level ?

  8. Just keep your foot on the accelerator as you turn over the ignition then slowly release, will be an issue with the needle in the carb, give it a tap and also check the pipe is connected properly.

@happystamps and @CollyP, am a bit of an ignoramus re carbs and bit reluctant to start messing with it here. Back on the campsite maybe..... :D

  10. mine could take a good 10-15 secs to start

    Stoopid question time.

Is it usually fine, or do you top up? If you usually top up and you haven't had to recently then you could have had fuel leak down into the engine. Just a thought - it happened to me.

I did my needle valve at the side of the road. Not a tricky job.
As I say, may not be this but just a thought.

  15. Sometimes you can free a stuck needle valve by giving the lid of the float chamber a sharp whack with the handle of a screwdriver

Its probably the float level a bit high and the jostling over all the potholes in the track shook petrol over the edge of the float chamber and down the carb throat.

You may get similar problems doing this.

Sorry for delay in replying. Got home fine, as if nothing had happened. Stopped at Tesco on the way. Whatever it was seems to have righted itself. I will check over what is within my skill level to check tomorrow. I think it would be handy to get over my carb fear by Stripping and checking that but hopefully won't need to til I get home next week sometime. Thanks for advice.

  19. Would that help?

PS Stripping a carb is dead easy. Go for it!

I always do my vehicle maintenance in the nip. Doesn't everyone? Think I'll get a rebuild kit though on return home
