  1. Can I fit a new engine seal without taking the engine out?

Yes you can. In fact if you take the engine out, you can't. :)

  3. Great thanks, was told I would have to, that's a relief gonna give it a go myself this weekend, is it easy to do, it looks like it is?

Bit of a squeeze behind oil cooler if it's upright fan 1600 engine, but easy. Once you think you're done, get underneath and pull it through where it's snagged, there's usually somewhere. That'll keep it a nice shape. Everytime the engine does have to come out you can reuse it more easily without the crinkles. Shiney side down I believe (can of worms - get yourself a bag of pop-corn). ;)

Ends away from the fan so if it did come adrift (which it won't) it won't get sucked in, block the fan and kill your engine. ;)

  6. Thanks for all the advise, wish me luck!!

Good luck, but you won't need it. If you have a hatch above the engine (pancake engine) it's less of a fiddle.

  8. OH F****LIP! , great ,i should stay off this site ! end not behind fan?did you say?(yes you did), was looking at mine ,got stainless steel exhast ,so close to seal ,it has been (by mechanic) lipped over top edge (seal looks to be Vshaped ,i.e. one edge under tinwear ,one over )to prevent contact with hot exhaust ,"now your speaking about "ends into fan" >great, makes note to inspect/remove engine soon.(when does this stop?)

It's when they get old, torn and tatty the probs start. A new one's fine any old how, but it won't be new forever...
