  1. I am about to remove the engine from my ts camper, ive never done this before ive watched a few vids on youtube, my question is as the engine has twin webers on it do i need to remove them before i drop the engine?

    Thanks

    Luke

  2. It depends on how high you can get the arse of the van up in the air. I managed to get my engine in with the dells still attached, albeit on short manifolds, but I wouldn't recommend it for safety reasons
    :)

  3. I'd take them off if I were you bud, especially if your doing it on your own, you need to make life as easy as possible for yourself. You also don't want to damage your carbs on the way out or in either.

  4. If you unbolt em from the heads , stuff clean rags in the holes, a nut down there can be a disaster.

  5. I've just put mine back with the webers attached, i had to remove the air filters.
Also I had to take the bumper off and the rear bodywork section that is removable on my bus.

  6. chances are you'll be pulling your carbs anyway, so do it while the engine's in situ (IMO)

  7. My engine comes out easily with the carbs attached. Remove the rear engine tinware, the big piece the heater ducts go through. I lower the engine onto the jack and then jack up the van once the engine is on the floor. As said above you will have to take the bumper off.

  8. I pulled mine from a very lowered van using the stock jack in the rear jacking point and the jack on a wooden block so it will go higher in the air.

Why does the bumper have to come off? It does on an early but not on a late.

If it's an upright type 1 engine the carbs don't have to come off as they're not as high as the rear fan housing anyway. Here is a vid if mine coming out on a motorbike jack. Only took 15 seconds

  9. i am going to start dropping engine on mine tomorrow 1600tp in the garage. was going to do it before xmas but didn't get time. just finished new steering wheel and now the horn works thanks to guys on tlb. my main ? is how high do you have to lift the rear up to get engine out, plus not going for any records like the joker but how long would it normally take to drop it out

  10. Couple of nuts and mine walks out on its own!!!!

    If only!!!!

  11. how long is a piece of string?....you'll know exactly how high you need to jack the bus up once the engine is unbolted and ready to be pulled....

  12. Yeah, allow a couple of hours for your first attempt. How are you doing it? What jacks are you using? I'd recommend the motorbike jack if you can get hold of one
    :)

  13. My bumper has to come off to remove rear body section, everything is so much easier then.
It takes me and my 14 year old about a hour to get our engine out, big trolley jack with a piece of wood under the oil filter plate and the engine balances fine.
We do jack the bus up a bit and put it on axle stands, makes getting under the bus a much better experience.

  14. Yours is an early then? Lates have fixed rear apron

  15. it might sound daft but was actually thinking of bringing my pallet truck home and dropping it onto a tray with wheels on it. last time the engine came out i hadn't had the van a month so garage took it out to do oil seals, they used a flat type of jack poss motorbike but then just lifted the whole van with their 4 post lift in a matter of seconds( they have retired now). how high does rear have to be lifted for engine fan to clear rear of van(1600tp)
    cheers joker

  16. i wanted some idea how high just because i wanted to do it in the garage and have about 18" above roof of van. i suppose it would be easier to do outside the push back in......:)

  17. with a low entry jack and dropping the engine to the floor you will have room to get the engine out. Taking off one of the rear wheels helps as you can slide the engine out sideways. Easily do-able.

  18. Drain the engine oil out then you can tip the engine. Watch my vid and I get the back up in the air around 18" but only in one side. My jack is around 4" in height when lowered. I tipped the engine back so the fan housing cleared the rear. Good idea to go in and out at a corner. I pushed the type 4 engine back in sideways under the nearside wheel arch.

  19. Mines registered 1979, imported from Holland, the rear section behind the bumper is bolted on with 6 metal plates.
Would this have been something that could have been added to make life easier?
