Hi has anybody got any idea about this engine code, its factory stamped,RE18K255M,thanks. Its a type 1 camper case.
None of the standard VW engine numbers had letters in the middle of their serial numbers. Probably a big remanufacturer stuck RE for remanufactured. Like all old engines it has been rebuilt at least once by now if it has seen any real use. As a result its specification and history are unknowable. You can take off a cylinder head to work out the cubic capacity, or dismantle it to find out how many times it has been line bored and the crank has been reground, and whether it has a different camshaft, and in so doing discover whether the case is reusable one more time.
Yes with 1776 B&P,the engine number is so strange its factory stamped, not ground off and remarked and not a plate with new number added.

Doesn’t Germany have lots of rules around Engine rebuilding and changes that mean they have to be certified and renumbered
New cases are supplied without an engine number on them, ready for you to stamp your own. Could well be a new case was used.
I was wondering whether the engine block is stamped with the German registration number of the trike, maybe this is required for their version of SVA to be allowed on the road My modern aluminium Autolinea case is confusing because it is stamped AS005338 or similar. Which means by the numbers it would be from 1974 ish, nearly correct for the bus. In fact it is much more recent, as it was new ìn 2018....Numbers mean little . Provided the case has 2 oil pressure relief springs, dont worry.
