Bay brum sold that engine a while back im sure Warrenty wont cover an engine thats overheated due to a snapped fan belt im afraid
The later bays all had servo assisted brakes its only earlys and crossovers that didnt as far as im aware To be honest zoe upgrading to a type four engine would be very costly If you have your heart set on more power and are willing to spend a bit then id reccomend a 1776 with twin carbs and a decent aftermarket exhaust If your really stuck for cash then go for a replacement 1600 and add an aftermarket exhaust and twin carbs further down the line when more funds are available If your going to remortgage the house then have a word with paul weeding about a large capacity type four engine
It sure can on the type 1 engines as you loose all cooling once that belt snaps That why you should always make sure your alternator warning light works and if it comes on pull over straight away On a type four engine the cooling fan is driven directly by the crank and so if the belt snaps you retain cooling but just lose alternator charge and you can keep driving untill your battery goes flat
sad news zoe, hope you get sorted, didn't you see the alternator light come on? while i understand you needing to do the job on a budget it may be a wise time to do the job once and right, don't get buying an engine you don't know or from someone who won't warranty it - it'll bite you in the ass in the long run i'd take the hit now and know it's right - good luck anyway.
Just thought i might mention , we had a vega rebuilt job, 2ltr , within the warranty a valve decided to to seat it self a bit to far , they paid to whip the engine out have it returned to them and sorted . then when the valve problem struck a second time it was out of warranty , that cost a few bob for new heads . If someone is getting rid of an engine there is usually a very good reason , if its from a stripper then it may be ok but you take a chance, at least if you get a recon you will get a warranty
I feel your pain, my engine went pop in September. I'm just getting roung to start saving for a 1776 too!
If one more person says this I shall actually SCREAM. It is IMPOSSIBLE to have stopped any blooming quicker - I was in the outside lane of the motorway at 65mph. I realised the second the fan belt snapped that something was wrong - I heard it, and I lost power. Short of slamming my brakes on and causing a pile up, I could not have got to the hard shoulder any quicker.
I wasn't aware that the engine could overheat that quickly feeling your pain! I would like to think a fan belt would have been good for a couple of years, I suppose it depends on how many miles you do! NOTE TO SELF - I Must Change The Belt. Hope you get sorted soon... Robo...
I'm sure you wouldn't but I would be tempted to lob a fan belt on & send it back under warranty sorry but it's gotto be worth a punt I shall get my coat, I'm not dishonest but para may have a point!
Could you put new new heads on your old engine,? If it is just the valves that are knackered. Then if its ok you have had a lucky escape, If it is totally shot buy a short engine and put your new heads on ?
