Engine in! Turn key and....

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Carryoncampers, Sep 14, 2015.

  1. Good bright oil and battery lights. Turn on elec fuel pump and hear it whirring nicely. So far so good.
Turn key further to start engine and... Nothing. Lights go out. No lights no nothing. Didn't even hear the starter have a go.
Ran jump leads to car battery (Can't find volt meter!!)
Still completely dead. No dash lights, or driving lights.
Fuses in fuse box look ok.
    What can I check next?

    Thanks.

Loose connections in engine bay. Starter. Battery, and the dynamo. One will be loose or come adrift.

  3. ^^^ Check earth strap to body, there is one on gearbox too. Check where the battery + joins starter motor

    ^ what Mick said :D

  5. thanks. Double checked and they are all as tight as a tight thing. Also, I'm a bit worried that all was well until I tried the starter and now not even a glimmer.

    Battery.

Give it another jump and try tapping the starter motor with a hammer or similar. Short sharp taps.

  7. Ted does this exact thing, (last time at a wedding!) It's the earth strap on Ted, I eventually narrowed it down.

  8. Hmm. If only I could find my volt meter. Probably is the battery.
Can I just check... To jump it. It's ok to connect negative on car battery to any metal on the camper isn't it? I've only got enough jump leads to do one long positive wire and a short neg to the front of the van.

  9. preferably to the engine block, cos if the earth is bad between gearbox and chassis you will still have no connection to the engine/starter

Have you checked the earth leads for corrosion, given them a clean up with some sandpaper or a wire brush and ensured the mating surface on the vehicle body is shiny..

  11. Thanks all! It was the battery. When I realised it wasn't holding charge after recharging I went and bought another.
    It works!
After 8 months out of the van, once the battery was changed, it started first time!
