Engine door needed - different style

Discussion in 'Late Bay Parts Classifieds' started by jigsawmark, Dec 1, 2012.

  1. Hi Guys,

I need to get a new engine door as mine is rusty on the inside and am having a paint job. I have seen engine doors on JK, VW Heritage etc but not like the one my bus has. On the pic you will see mine has 2 vent looking things either side of the number plate in red but all of the ones that i have found are just flat, and I like what I have but need a new one or one that is less rusty. Can anyone direct me as to where I might find one ?

    Thanks !

    Mark

  2. I guess that's a home made mod, i've certainly never seen them before, but it's a '72 engine lid which is one year only making it even rarer! Hens teeth and all that. I'd get your restorer to transplant the vents onto a solid lid, it shouldn't be too hard. Try FBI or similar for the lid.

  3. Hi dude,

Thanks for the reply. I dont think it is a mod as looks too good, maybe you are right and it is for the 1972 and thats it. I think I may have seen another camper with it but cant be sure. The guy who is respraying my bus says it is too rusty on the engine side of the panel but might ask him to do what he can or as you say get a normal one and ask him to make the mod, as I think it looks a bit different and not so flat but would rather buy a new one if poss. Will keep looking I guess as I am sure there must be one out there somewhere

  4. Ps what is FBI ? Sorry if being a thicko !

  5.
  6. The bus is in the workshop at the moment but form memory they don't have any use apart form cosmetic.

Think maybe I should ask him to take these off the old one and put them onto the new lid but not sure how hard it would be to make it look good

  7. Interesting.....I would have thought vents just there were perfect for drawing in exhaust fumes and feeding them through into the cabin. Especialy when stationary with the engine running.

  8. As Bay birmingham has said you cant get a new engine lid because you have the early late bay style one the later one have pins instead of hinges, so FBI are bay importers and breakers I believe they are about £80 plus around £10 p&p

The 2 flutey things dont look original to me either are there holes behind them?

  10. Same engine lid as mine, don't have those bits. As said I reckon it's a mod done by PO.

  11. Mark,

I thought I recognised that engine hatch! I was the one who was bidding against you on Ebay for that bus! Was gutted I didn't win it. I've since found another one though.

When I went to view the van I asked the PO what they were for and he didn't know. He thought it might be a US spec hatch.

I think you got a bargain with that bus, the PO had spent thousands on it over the last couple of years :)

    Matt

PS What are you planning to do with the "Solid" rear bumper which appeared to be welded on to the bodywork?
